Rumor: Danish CAA Has Grounded 10 SAS MDs

Tue Aug 23, 2011 7:24 pm

I heard from a reliable source that the Danish CAA has grounded 10 SAS MDs today, probably due to maintenance issues. The story is not out in the media yet, but I guess they will quickly find out if true.

I cannot identify my source, though, as this, as I said, is still unofficial.

Ifthey grounded, why isn't there more flights cancelled or delayed at CPH today? Just wen't through the list at SAS had 5 cnx oday, of which 3 seems to be due a CRJ-900 struggling today, but those cancellations appeared in the morning anf afternook. In addition, a A321 roundtrip to ARN was anelled due to tech

Not saying your wrong, but their MDs are flying right now!

These could be LN- and SE- registered aircraft; presumably the Danish CAA would only ground OY- registered aircraft?

They wouldn't be able to get any aircraft on such a short notice, and looking there are this evening not any non-SAS aircraft operating for SAS from CPH, except for the 4 Cimber CRJ-200

So if they are being grounded, they not been parked yet

I'm trying to get more info on the matter. You could be right, but I doubt that I would get this information if it wasn't right.. as you said, maybe they are not actually grounded yet, but will be soon.

I heard that it is MD80s that are affected, but as I heard this from one person who heard it from another, I guess it is difficult to confirm. (Both sources working in the aviation industry)

Apparently they found a mouse in the cabin. Simple solution: Install cat.

If the Danish CAA grounds planes would they not do that with immediate effect? I mean if there are safety issues with the aircraft, I doubt they would let them fly until it suites the airline to fix them?

No cancelled SK flights today, except from the flights that should have been operated by the above mentioned CRJ.

Is that source affiliated to Ryan Air?

If the Danish CAA found issues regarding maintenance, which would result in grounding, then they would be grounded immediately and not 'after another few flights'. Because that would raise questions to the safety of the passengers, crew and people on the ground... So, if there are no visible operational troubles in the SAS network as we speak, we can be quite certain indeed that the MD80's are not grounded and operating normally.

No.

I was told SAS has called other airlines to try to get a replacement for the grounded aircraft. I was also told that it was a replacement for 10 MD80s. And that is all I was told.

As there is still no evidence that what I was told is correct, then all we can do is wait for someone else to confirm this (including the media) However, the people I got the info from, should know all this first hand, if true. That's why I was so certain that the info was true.

The Danish CAA does not have the authority to do anything like this alone. Only on danish registered planes. SAS operations are supervised by something called OPS Utvalget, a cooperation between the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish CAA.This is because SAS is a scandinavian operation rather than only danish. Any actions are taken together with Norwegian and swedish CAA:s within this framework. So the headline in itself is wrong.

You are correct that SAS has contacted other airlines lately, and the last days JetTime has been doing some flight for them.

But this is not due to any grounding of the MD fleet, but SAS struggling with "long-term" snag on one A321, one CRJ-900 and one MD-80, on their CPH base. This maybe solve the misunderstanding?

Afaik one 737 from the OSL base ha also been helping out lately
