Boac Uniform Wings

Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:20 pm

Hello,
Recently I have had the urge to delve into some old pictures and memorabilia that I have come across and something I found was a picture of BOAC crew who operated the first flight to JFK, a single shot of a woman in uniform close up and a pair of BOAC wings. Could anybody explain though why the BOAC uniform includes a large letter 'S' on the wings?

For an example of a pic of BOAC wings to see what I am referring to, visit uniform freak.com under BOAC.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Mark

Traditionally in BOAC only pilots had a pair of wings, with all other crew members just having a one wing badge
Like the cabin crew who had "S"on the boss, the Flight Engineer had an "E" on the boss and I believe the Navigators had an "N" but I cannot be sure of that as by the time I joined all Navigators had been replaced by pilots.
