US Airports That Were Visited By Concorde

Wed Aug 31, 2011 12:30 pm

JFK, IAD, DFW were the only scheduled, but what others got a visit?

TPA, 3 times, 2 BA , 1 AF
The 2nd BA was originaly supposed to be SRQ, thanks NIMBYS !

I have a pic of one at MIA in July 1987.

Apparently, MCO got simutaneous landings in 1982.

IIRC, there were a few charter flights to/from New Orleans at one point. Remember it being in the news as it was a big deal! Can't recall the time frame though.

It stopped at ONT on the newly completed 26L/8R as part of one of its 'round-the-world tours back in the 80's.

I remember a BA SSC came into ATL maybe in 1982? I cannot remember the exact date but it was a charter and people were lined up along the Interstate watching...like a Space Shuttle launch!

DTW's now defunct Nomads chartered Concordes several times in the 1980s and 1990s.

My only Concorde flight was an Air France ferry flight from JFK to DTW in 1999, to position the aircraft for a Nomads charter - an experience I will never forget!

Demonstrator, sn201(?) visited SFO (my first sighting) and ANC during a world promo tour in the early days of the program. One side in BA livery, the other AF livery.

PHKO and PHNL were regular stops during 'round the world charter flights in the 90's.

Christopher Orlebar's book "The Concorde Story" has a complete list of diversions, charter destinations, etc. I don't own a recent edition of it, and the Amazon.com "click to look inside!!!" feature only gives a very blurry view of the page, but there are a LOT of cities listed. Here are a few that I could decipher:

Albany
Andrews AFB
Anchorage
Asheville
Atlanta
Atlantic City
Baltimore
Bangor
Battle Creek
Boston
Buffalo
Charleston
Chicago
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Colorado Springs

And that's just part of one column of six-point type.

As noted earlier MIA did have schedule service with the Concorde and for many years. It was 3X Weekly I IIRC and it was LHR-IAD-MIA-IAD-LHR from 1984 to at least 1989.

There is a picture in the database of an AF Concorde at FLL it did a charter flight to EZE from FLL.
LAX got some of the first Concordes for both AF and BA on demenstration flights in the 1974.

That is quite a list, but it is not complete. The alphabetical list of cities for "The Americas" mysteriously ends with "R" cities. I know for a fact that the Concorde visited Wichita, KS for a charter flight in 1992. I was able to get on the aircraft while it was in ICT. My father flew on the ferry flight from JFK to ICT.

BFI

I forget the occasion. It was in 1989 or 1990. I remember climbing out impressively fast. I was in the parking lot of the old Billy McHales restaurant in Renton and saw it. It was doing the LACRE departure which takeoff on 13R to the south and turns east at that waypoint (LACRE stands for Longacres, which is the old race track and now Boeing Training and Marketing headquarters).

The ConcordeSST.com list is missing some destinations. I remember Concorde coming to Duluth, MN (DLH) in the late 1980s and doing an 'around the lake' scenic flight. I lived in Thunder Bay then and *so* wanted to go on it but my parents didn't want to pony up the $750.
But that was when I ruled the world

When it came to PDX, I was departing from the gate next to it. Lots of press and all departures and arrivals were temporarily suspended for its landing. It was a charter that flew sub sonic from JFK and was something to do with the Oregon symphony. Security on the arrival terminal was limited to passengers only plus selected dignitaries.

The prototype (or whatever it was) visited SFO before Concorde ever entered service-- 1974, maybe. Don't think it's been back to SFO since; the airport turns up its nose at the noise. Don't recall how many visits to OAK-- a couple anyway.

Concorde has visited CMH on at least two occasions in the mid-90's for charter flights. I was working in a construction trailer off of Taylor Station Road in (I think) 1995 when I heard a massive roar from overhead. I ran to a window to see Concorde on approach to CMH, landing to the west. It was neat to see the airplane, but it was far more impressive to hear it. It shook the trailer.

I didn't see HNL listed. Air France sent the Concorde to Hawaii in 1987 and I think 1988, and it was there for a week. They were offering supersonic flights during the week 1hr out and 1hr back, and I think they served lunch. I didn't get to ride on it, but I did help turn the Concorde while it was in HNL, and was impressed how high it was and how narrow the cabin was. Here's a photo I took in 1987 in Honolulu.

I saw an Air France Concorde make several practice touch-and-go's at SWF. Snapped a few pictures of it from the window of a Midway F-100 awaiting takeoff clearance. The event even made it into our local newspaper.

It did make it to Cleveland on at least two occasions, once in 1985 when it was here on a charter:

http://www.opshots.net/gallery2/index.php?page=photos&id=1358

And another in 1987 when it did a fly-by at the Cleveland Airshow at BKL:

http://www.opshots.net/gallery2/index.php?page=photos&id=17430

I never did get to see it here in CLE myself, but I did catch it on a weather diversion at EWR once. (JFK was fogged in)

Sounds about right to me. I have a grainy pic of the takeoff with 3 TWA L-1011s in the background. I started a thread once to see if anyone could get me the registration, but no luck. I couldn't even find mention of the visit in archived St. Louis Post Dispatch articles. It was definitely a well publicized event, I remember the roads around the airport were packed bumper to bumper on the shoulder with onlookers.
