Did My Eyes Deceive Me Tonight At EWR?

Thu Sep 01, 2011 3:40 am

Most of you will roll your eyes that I take the time to start a thread on such a minor detail but I thought I knew the US fleets like the back of my hand. I was walking through EWR tonight and something caught my eye out of the window in Terminal C. It was an ex-Continental (now UA) 757 with the small exit door just aft of the wing, like the kind of 57s that US Airways has. I've known all legacy Continental AND United 757s to be the model where they have the standard 6 doors with the four small over the wing exits (two on each side). I doubled back for a closer look thinking maybe it was a 739 with that door plug just behind the wing. But no, there were the Rolls Royce engines. It was a 757. I played around on the net tonight to see if I could find this. Might this be a recent lease? Anybody have a clue. Again, a minor detail, but for the real airplane geeks among us, it jumped out at me.

For a second there I thought a flight left on time.

Anyway, my guess would be that your eyes didn't deceive you, and what you saw was a 757-300.

Related to this, has United started sending PMUA 757s to EWR? I saw a 757 in new United colors landing at EWR the other day and this one did not have winglets...I thought all 41 PMCO 752s had winglets?

They do, as well as all the 21 757-300s.

Well, weren't they already at EWR? What was PMUA sending to LAX & SFO?

How many PMUA 757 had winglets?

So then I guess that United has started sending PMUA 757s out of Newark...How did United get so behind on winglets btw? I saw a PS bird landing at JFK last night without winglets too!

Most PMUA 757s will most likely not receive the winglets, except the ETOPS and PS aircraft. UA was very late to the winglet party, CO was one of the first along with WN. PMCO even had winglets on their 737-300s and 737-500s.

Thanks for clarifying. Shame on me for not realizing it was a 757-300, especially with my boasting that I know all the fleets so well. I had never seen a 753 parked over at the western-most satellite of terminal C. Usually they are parked at gates 70, 71 etc. That was what threw me. As far as the the PMUAs 757s out of/into EWR, I guess if we see them now they must be coming in from ORD or SFO. I didn't think they had started meshing the two airlines ops yet. Can't wait to start seeing A319s/320s parked at Term C.

And Denver, I flew on a UA 757 to Denver this past June.

PMUA always had 757's going to EWR, at peak we would see many flights to ORD on the 757. Currently all of the PMUA 757's will go to terminal A not Terminal C, since they are still serviced by the PMUA crews that are primarily based out of A. The only Terminal C PMUA flights are the 2 long-haul 767's,
PMUA started is pull-down of EWR services long before the merger. I remember when PMUA had 10-14 flights a day to ORD, all mainline and many where 757.

To answer the winglet question. PMUA did not see the economic advantage to them. I am guessing this had to the typical mission that they had within the PMUA network. Remember PMCO has hubs on the fringes of the country so many flights are long-haul, where as PMUA had many mid-continent hubs. This means many shorter flights. For example, the benefits of putting winglets on a 757 that is doing a ORD-MSP-ORD turn is minimal and may actually be more costly. Now PMUA does have the subfleet for Hawaii and PS. All of those planes where scheduled to get the winglets, but that has been at a very slow pace (which was typical PMUA for this type of thing. example, 3-class conversions.
Lastly, PMUA had the really long bankruptcy so that played a role in making capital expeditures and that hurt them on this front.

UA was very large at EWR, they had a maintenance hangar and a brand new cargo building which opened around 2002 (which CO took over a couple years ago).

My son and I went over to EWR to pick up my wife and daughter who were coming back from visitng her parents, and we went a little early so he could ride Airtrain and watch airplanes (he's 3...it doesn't take much to amuse him, plus who am I kidding, it was as much fun for me as it was for him). Over at Terminal A we saw a PMUA 757 in the new merger colors. I assume that moving forward we'll only be able to tell (at lease ftom a distance) which 757s are PMUA or PMCO by looking at the engines.

When did CO finish installing winglets on to the 753's? They had to be the last aircraft in the fleet to receive them. Last time I flew on one (late last year I believe) they were still without the winglets.

PMUA 757s fly EWR-SFO/DEN/ORD on and off. This summer there were 4x UA 757 on SFO-EWR including 2 red eyes. I flew LAX-SFO-EWR in January on a UA 757. Great flight!

To be fair, I actually did leave EWR on time once. It was a 0600 flight.
