AF A380 Back On CDG-NRT

Mon Sep 05, 2011 2:26 pm

Starting today Sept. 5th, AF is operating again an A380 on CDG-NRT-CDG (AF276/275).
The flight was downgraded to a B772ER and then a B77W following the drop of demand after the earthquake and the tsunami last March.

The A380 will remain on CDG-NRT for at least 2 months during a "test period" as AF is expecting the demand will increase again ... If not, the B77W will be back on this flight and the A380 is planned to be transferred on one of the Daily CDG-PVG flight.

AF & JAL are jointly operating the 4 Daily Flights between Paris and Tokyo : 3 on CDG-NRT (AF A388 + AF B77W + JL B77W) 1 on CDG-HND (JL B777 using AF slots at HND).

Confirm, are the needed frames for AF276/275 CDG-NRT-CDG coming from AF084/083 CDG-SFO-CDG which suppose to be switched to 77W at the beginning of this month (though the flight on Saturday (Sept 4th) was still operated by A380)?

AF084/083 CDG-SFO-CDG is now operated with a B77W and AF346/"'è CDG-YUL-CDG now with a B744.
Two airframes are needed to operate 1 x Daily CDG-NRT-CDG.

1 on CDG-HND (JL B777 using AF slots at HND).

Not exactly on topic but how is that? I guess it's much better for JL to operate that flight since the timmings are poor and JL can maybe make a use of the aircraft in the downtime.

Otherwise, a little sad to see AF A380 out of YUL and SFO. Wouldn't they make more sense on South hemisphere flights startoing November? JNB is already covered, what about GRU/GIG?

The A380 will return to YUL starting Dec or Jan.

what about GRU/GIG?

1 x Daily A380 on CDG-GRU + 1 x Daily A380 on CDG-GIG are planned for the winter 2012/13 schedule.

AF owns the slots at HND but indeed , considering the restrictions at HND, it's a much better aircraft utilization rate if the flight is operated by a HND base airplane.

JNB is already covered,

Not sure yet that the A380 will continue on CDG-JNB after CDG-CPT nonstop will be opened next November.
AF still wait how it will affect the loads on CDG-JNB.

It's nice to hear things picking up for NRT demand.

How did AF do with the A388 on CDG-SFO-CDG?

The AF A388 will be sorely missed in SFO. It was a treat to unexpectedly welcome her to SFO as a result of AF repositioning her from CDG-NRT-CDG after the Japanese earthquake. Any chance AF 388s will return to SFO as part of regularly scheduled service? There is a healthy French community here in San Francisco, Silicon valley, and of course, it is a very popular tourist destination. Hope the aircraft was profitable on this route for AF (this summer.) Keeping my fingers crossed.

Unfortunately it's sounds as this will be the only time we see the AF whale here. Plan is back to a 747 next summer. Of course this very well could change, but doubt it. However 2012 should see the arrival of the EK A380.

Thanks flySSC for the answers! I guess it's an overall improve to get the CPT flights, but we'll miss our AF990 "super" on the freq at night!
does seem AF is struggling to find markets for their superjumbos (them putting it back so "soon" on NRT is what makes me say that - but let's give it some chance). Hope the handfull they'll get will be properly used.

No. Air France struggled to find an A380 ready airport in a very short period after pulling from NRT ...
That's why SFO got it instead of LAX.
