Turbulent Atlantic Crossing Today?

Wed Sep 07, 2011 4:35 pm

Just looking at the Turbulence charts over the Atlantic and it looks pretty rough from Western Scotland stretching way out across the ocean westbound towards Canada !
I notice on flightradar24 that flights are taking very northerly or very southerly routings today westbound...

Anybody know what the rides are like today both west and eastbound ? aircraft seem to be taking advantage of the strong tailwinds heading towards Europe...

Thx

I was on DL202, which arrived Tuesday (JFK-ARN last flight of the season), and it was bumpy the entire way. Seat belt sign was turned off once for about 30 minutes. If I had to guess it was probably light bordering on moderate at times. But that was yesterday...

Looks like there is a large disturbance moving through the northern Atlantic. Looks like the likely culprit.

Would this be the remains of hurricane Irene?

My dad did YUL-BRU last night and said it was fairly bumpy all the way there. They got there in 5hr40mins, though, which is pretty darn fast. Flight Aware shows them going pretty much in a straight line.

Very strong winds over the Atlantic at the moment and quite a few turbulence areas ...

I flew AF346 CDG-YUL on sunday and it took us 7h10 which is quite long ... but on the return flight AF347 on monday, it tooks us only 5h35 to reach CDG from YUL !

More likely the remains of Lee. Katia will be along shortly, too.

Indeed, and Katia will be a far more vigirous depression, registering as 960MB and lower during the Atlantic track on the latest NWP Guidance.

It's likely to track somewhere along the 53rd parallel for some time, before tracking more Northeasterly and becoming a largescale low. I suspect that the Jet in advance and south of this feature will be exceptionally strong with a widespread Southwesterly flow across Northwest Europe.

It has all the hallmarks of a nasty source of turbulence!

Along with the bumpy ride, pax bound to IAD are experiencing delays and diversions.

AF 28 diverted to YUL
BA 217 and OS 93 diverted to PHL

and if you track LH 418 and TK 7 on flightaware, they seem like approaching land around VA beach/Norfolk (ORF) before turning north towards RIC, interesting routing.

BA 285 had to take a more southerly route across the ocean as far as the west coast of Greenland.

The NAT's (North Atlantic Tracks) were split last night for the westbound flights. Tracks A and B were north over Greenland and tracks C-F were south of 50N. A large jet ran across from YYR to SNN. That is the reason for the split track structure. Rides for the westbound should have been good seeing as the tracks were out of the jet.

Flew CDG-ORD on AF 664 today... we took a very unusual routing going quite far south - the northernmost point of our Atlantic crossing was actually just south of Plymouth! We then went more or less in a straight line to NYC (flightaware says we took NATD) and from there south of the Great Lakes to ORD... the ride was slightly bumpy at times, but mostly smooth.

AA137 from LHR to LAX was very smooth today. Actually among the smoothest t/a crossings in the last few years.

I was on CO 81 GVA-EWR (9/7) and we took a southerly track with an 8:30 hr flight time. FA's commented it would be rough to passengers in front of me but was actually a pretty smooth ride the entire way.

I crossed eastbound last night on NAT W. Ride was fine with some light turbulence plus a few jolts. However I heard at least two other aircraft on a more northerly track experience some interesting severe turbulence with +/- 1000 fpm and +/- 20 kts.

Yes it was a very interesting ride to say the least.... I was in the crew bunks at the time and nearly kissed the roof a few times!!! Seemed to go on for a long time too.... Would have hated to have known what it was like on anything smaller than the 380!

Even as far east as the North Sea it has been ludicrously windy. I flew SXF-GLA today and we had headwinds upto 160kts right on the nose heading westbound, at around FL370 as far as I can remember. Needless to say this added at least half an hour to a flight with a block time of 2 hours 10. Even at FL130 there was a 75kt wind.

I flew BOS - LHR on BA214 on Monday night. 5hours and 15 minutes later we were making our approach to LHR. VOD showed 147mph tail winds and seatbelt signs were on for at least 3 hours in total if not more. Turbulence was light to moderate most of the way.

Just crossed CDG to EWR this afternoon. We took a very southerly route; a FA asked the pilot for me and it was track F, the southernmost he said. We also flew at 41 000 feet which seems also quite unusual in an A330. The flight was smooth almost all the way with very minor bumps during the flight.

So in the past 18 months I've done the northernmost route, well over Greenland and this southern route, from CDG to EWR.
