Plane Crash Filmed From Inside

Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:02 pm

I was snooping around on youtube after looking at a video related to a takeoff in a bad storm. I came across this video. Apparently the aircraft crashed in 1984 killing both occupants, and was found 3 years later. Another member thought it looked like a video from a RC plane, and I kinda thought that too (the youtube video was only 45 seconds.) But, I came across a 6 minute video, and I began to think that this very well could be authentic. It is linked to a NTSB Crash Docket. Authentic, or not?

Soooooo.. I wonder if anyone knows of other footage shot from inside a plane during a crash?

Yes - a TACA 767 crashed in Guatemala City, it was filmed by a passenger.
Flight 510 - April 6, 1993. I believe it is on YouTube also.

That L-19 video is disturbing a bit. I love L-19s and the way the cockpit is, its very open view, you have a good view all around you. It just sucks when you end up in a canyon or some boxed in scenario on rising terrain and need to move out or turn around.

The natural reaction for me when flying is Id see the attitude indicator, double check the leveling, and look at my left or right at any higher terrain to get a judgement of how close or high it is to turn around.

But that was a steep bank though and other factors may have come into play. RIP to those

Don't forget the controlled crash of a 720 by the Dryden Reasearch Centre in 1984 to test a fuel additive which was supposed to supress fire:

There was a very eerie copy out on the net a while back of a video shot onboard Air New Zealand Flight 901 just as it impacted the slopes of Mount Erebus in Antarctica.

Sadly it has since been removed and i have been trying to find it for a long ass time. If anyone knows where to find it could they post a link?

Since the Air New Zealand crash was a sightseeing flight, several people snapped photos at impact. I have seen two different brief video footages taken at the moment of impact. It happened fast so there is not much to see really, but it's creepy for sure.

Go on the internet and look for these referenced items you can find them.

Links to the mentioned footage have been posted at a.net before, however it gets deleted because it's in bad taste, just to let you know.

Tragic video regarding the L-19.
Here is a link to a classic FAA film on Density altitude. Still very relevant.

That L19 crash back in 84 is very sad. I know its easy to say this sitting on my computer chair, but this type of accident is incredibly avoidable. Even before the pilot ever left the ground he could have known that the ground was higher than his aircraft was capable of flying at. I guess you could say the same thing for most crashes, but its just sad that he waited so far into the mountains before he decided it was time to turn around. Then when he made the turn she simply stalled and that was the end.

I remember seeing a video a couple years back from some guys that went flying in their small aircraft and came soooo close to crashing. They were flying in a mountain ridge area similar to the 84 crash of the L19 shows above. The area fogged or clouded up and while a passenger was filming in total IMC condition you see tree tops fly by directly under the aircraft. Turns out they clipped all sorts of trees and after landing they discovered the aircraft sustained all sorts of damage from tree impacts. Can you imagine how cllose they were to death? unreal! Has anyone seen this video or have a link to it?

This is, in all seriousness, a recurring nightmare that I have.

That L19 crash was an example of poor airmanship...
What disturbed me the most was how low he was flying near a lot of the ridges... altitude is something you can usually never have enough of. Sure he was sightseeing, but there isn't much (if anything) he couldn't have seen just as easily with an extra 500ft.

He wasn't sightseeing, he was doing an aerial survey of beetle infestation for the forestry service (or something similar). That's why he had the video camera.

It's legit. Textbook CFIT/high altitude scenario right there

That sounds familiar. There was this one video on youtube of some idiot pilots from a couple of years ago who were doing formation flying in IFR of all things. It was a Bonanza IIRC. Long story short they got into hard IMC and at one point you can see a tree graze the side of the wing. Eventually they land and there was some light damage to the wing tip. Not only were they stupid enough to do that they even uploaded it to youtube, sure enough the FAA got a hold of them real quick and AFAIK they got in serious trouble, and the video was removed.

They were begging for a Darwin Award, they really deserved it.

Well even for 1984 that is a pretty crap quality video camera then!
Unlikely to see beetles from that height so would assume he must have been looking at damaged trees... well damaged trees probably don't look too much different from 300ft as they do from 500ft+

That is pretty good quality for a video tape that was in a crash, small fire, hanging in pieces, and exposed to the elements for 3 years.

That could have been much worse than it was.

I have monitored mountain pine beetle spread from aerial photos take from over 10,000 AGL feet before. The trees stand out from live forest stands when they're being attacked by beetles, very easy to identify.
