What's Happening In Hartford?

Wed Oct 04, 2000 5:27 am

It's been a year since Southwest moved into BDL. America West followed with service this year, giving Connecticut nine of the 11 major airlines. Things are hopping. Passenger service is growing by more than 20 percent a year! Gates are packed.

Construction is about to start on a new terminal and a new parking garage is going up.

What else is going on for those in Connecticut? How are the loads for WN and AW? What new routes are planned? What routes should there be? (I vote for Tampa, which Metrojet let go despite high loads -- but low yields).

What's Southwest's next step?

Any BDL insiders here? I'd like to know your opinion.

I must admit that I can't tell you much, but I was born in Hartford, CT, in 1983, but I've lived in Alabama since I was three. I fly up there every couple of years, and of course I always fly through Bradley.

My Dad still lives up there, and he says BDL's needed a parking garage for a long time. Glad to see it's finally happening. I personally like the Delta 767-300ERs that we fly on back to Atlanta.

Dad was planning to fly on a $99 fare from somewhere nearby (in CT) to Nashville, but he gave decided to stick with Delta so we wouldn't have to come get him from the airport. I hope Delta and American and Midwest Express are still going strong at BDL.

YX

Wed Oct 04, 2000 5:53 am

just came back from my second non-rev trip to BDL from MKE on YX...read the trip report. Load factors are quite good. On the sunday return, I barely slipped aboard as there were 84 pax listed plus 7 non revs! Regardless, YX still provides the best care to Bradley and will continue to do so for a while. Remember, BDL even has a YX counter! NW provides service for YX at LAX!

I've lived in Connecticut for the last 16 of my 19 years and have flown out of and into BDL many times. I agree, the parking was sorely needed. YX seems to be getting busier at DBL every time I'm there.

Ironically enough the Southwest effect has graced everyone at BDL except SW. Everytime BDL posts #s SW's loads come out between 60 and 65% which is rather poor for them. I am curious to see SWs aug 200 BDL #'s. The only bad thing about the SW effect with majors is that it lowers yeidlsw and the majors are more reluctant to add flights, UA actually will ax 1 BDL-ORD flight and will be down to 5 daily.

It takes a while to build a base, so I think WN will eventually do better in Hartford. Since they started at BDL they've added a flight to Nashville. Problem is, they only have two gates at the moment. Also, since Albany started service, BDL no longer gets traffic from that area.

UA cutting a flight to ORD makes sense for them, given the operational problems they've been having. With AA and WN, there's still 11 or 12 flights a day to Chicago.

Metrojet has shifted flights from BDL to IAD to BWI instead, going face-to-face with WN instead of UA at Dulles.

Also forgot to mention that a TWA message board I was reading speculated that TWA would begin BDL-San Juan flights to build up the Focus City in San Juan. This would make sense, since American's daily 757 to San Juan is almost always oversold given the Hartford area's large Puerto Rican community. Any confirmation of these plans?

I am originally from Springfield, MA and they have a large Puerto Rican population also. San Juan flights from BDL would definately work well.

YES! I'd love to see a daily MD80 BDL-SJU on TW. I've been hoping TW would mirror many of AA's flights out of SJU. BDL, MIA, and DCA would be terrific. TW has slots at DCA, but I'm not sure if they extend to Puerto Rico, anyone comment?

Well, if the Southwest effect doesn't improve Southwest loads, then Hartford might soon see a return to the "lack of Southwest" effect. If they make money, that's fine. As a shareholder, I'll take a 65% full plane making money over a 95% full plane losing money any day. But....if Southwest loses money in Hartford, they may just have to pull up stakes. Not a good thing for CT residents enjoying low airfares brought about by that "effect"

Southwest's systemwide load factor for Sept. was 65.7 percent, so 60-65 is a bit low but probably not too bad.

I know that WN's flights to Midway, Nashville and Orlando from BDL are usually pretty full; it's the 8 flights to BWI that will wreck the numbers.

Also, as stated above, it's yields that are important. And BDL has a high proportion of business travelers -- more than ALB or even BUF, the newest WN destinations.

I know AA began non-stop LAX-BDL service a few months ago. How are the loads on that? Look for United to start a non-stop LAX-BDL flight if AA is successful.

Doubtful of a UAL-LAX flight UA and AA compete with their west coast destinations SFO-UA and LAX AA Also UA has been consistantly downgrading BDL with ever new schedule. AA seems more promising for growth, I think you would see AA ad another western flight before UA but even that is a long shot.
As for SW the reason their yeilds are so low is proably due to the fact that BDL is a biz market. at most other airports that SW goes to some majors take at hit at first. at BDL DL and AA were not effected because they have contracts for their biz pax where was SW is really only picking up leisure hence MCO flights running full and BWI flights not so.. One thing for sure is i wouldnt look for as much growth next year as BDL had a big year in 1999 but no where near as many new flights in 2000 none the less the pax count will still be high though.

This just in -- Delta Express just announced Tampa service, which MetroJet bailed this year. Two daily flights begin in March.

Dear all,

Wow...just looked at BDL's website, over six million pax in '99 and over seven million expected this year. I had no idea BDL had grown that much!

The new terminal shown on the website will be a big addition, but the map showing it suggests it won't be big enough (airside) to take all of the old terminal B traffic. The site says they're going to tear down B after the addition to A is completed.

What's the scoop? Will the current international wing attached to B, be kept for concourse space? It's connected to existing A and could be reached easily from there.

There's already some grumbling that the new terminal won't be big enough airside. In fact, every night there are 10-12 birds parked off Terminal A because of a lack of gates. We'll see what happens.

As far as AmWest service stated above, it was a given -- the A319 was too big for the route from the get-go. The CRJ is better suited. I understand AmWest's Phoenix and Vegas flights are doing very well.

Dear 757-767,

An A319 does seem like too much BDL-CMH. AmWest calls CMH a hub but my impression is that it has turned out to be a solid O&D operation. The density on the BDL route is probably only enough for the CRJ.

When AmWest first opened CMH, they had Dash 8 service 3x daily to my hometown of Rochester, NY and other places to feed the jets. But they didn't seem to hold share with US, CO, and DL in the region, and the props to ROC folded in less than a year.
