QF's New Asian Carrier To Be Called.... RedQ?

Mon Sep 12, 2011 6:06 pm

They Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that QF's new premium Asian-based carrier is to be called RedQ.

Apparently Qantas have lodged a number of trademark applications, including RedQ, RedQ Executive Express, RedSky and One Asia.

More details here:

Your link to the SMH piece doesn't seem to work. Interesting that the article speculates that Virgin Australia could potentially object that the name RedQ is similar to its Red Jet registered charity name.

Doesn't sound particularly prestigious. Sounds like a LCC.

They should call it 88888888. That's 8 8's.

A few wags are already giving RedQ the nickname FarQ (I don't know if this has meaning outside of Australia) which is quite funny and will probably stick.

New rumour is that Qantas are thinking of renaming their Australian operations BarbieQ......just joking.

In all seriousness though -- do not like the sound of this as a Premium Airline. I think they have to get away from the Q and do something a bit more independent and tailored to an Asian market if they're hoping to capture any of that market. That One Asia name is interesting though, lots of marketing potential ('The One for flying in Asia' sort of thing)...

But I do think this confirms my theory that this airline is designed to initially fly connecting pax onwards into Asia from a QF hub in SE Asia. It sounds like they're alligning the branding to that of QF quite a lot.

Interesting name for a premium carrier., but I certainly agree, it sounds like a LCC name. Maybe Qantas Executive or QE for short?

I doubt that they will go with RedQ, however, if they did, I am sure it would be backed by thousands of dollars in brand-name research throughout Asia, and to be perfectly honest, what people in Australia think of the name doesnt matter at all. I personally prefer RedSky or OneAsia... probably the latter...

too close perhaps to air asia?? only three letters difference, and if they were indeed thinking of a red livery it would be quick tricky to cut through .

Am I the only one who lives the idea of the company being called Qantasia? Keeps the QF brand, modern, sharp, memorable. A perfect name IMO.

Qantas Asia sounds the best and has brand recognition. No need for them to get so "fancy" with RedQ.

How about calling the airline "Quantas". That way when anyone misspells the real name of the airline they can say they were referring to the subsidiary.

Maybe keep the same livery but asian it up a bit. Replace the Kangaroo on the tail with a giant Monitor Lizard.

That would certainly keep it multinational, an Australian owned airline, based in either KUL or SIN and named after a New Zealand racehorse.

I'm pretty sure this would run afoul of the sale of Qantas act which was designed to protect the "Australianess" of the Qantas brand. My, probably, simplistic understanding is that if "Qantas" appears in the name of this new airline it would be subject to the sale act and if it does not include it, then the sale act does not apply. If its subject to the sale act it can not be based in Asia.

FedEx might object too. AsiaOne is the name of both their network and service offering for Asia and Oceania, and I do believe they trademarked the name.

Customers of Qantas' Asian subsidiary wouldn't care, or get confused, but occasional or new FedEx customers could be mistaken for thinking FedEx is using the new subsiduary to fly their freight around during the day, rather than overnight on dedicated FedEx flight, thereby diluting FedEx's brand.

Quoting DFWHeavy (Reply 14):
Qantas Asia

Beyond the sales act, I'm not sure it would have the intended effect. Years ago, many carriers set up dedicated subsidiaries to get around restrictions placed by the Chinese government to block airlines servicing Taiwan. Several such carriers merely added Asia to their original name, such as Air France Asia or Swissair Asia. Qantas Asia might make some people think the airline flies between Taiwan and Australia exclusively.

Otherwise a good idea but when you look at what QANTAS stands for it would be Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service Asia which doesn't sound that appealing nor sane to me. And it's kind of generic to just ad the region at the end of the previous name albeit done very frequently.

RedQ is a certainly better than the horrible name SQ named it subsidiary but still kind of tacky.

Very good point -- I guess that if they were to go with it they would want to differentiate themselves as much as possible, and we probably wouldn't see them basing in KUL with a red livery considering the almighty presence of D7 there.

Qantas Asia

Don't like it. Qantas is a uniquely Australian name and brand (there was some study not that long ago that I seem to remember and Qantas was one of the only brands that people around the world could come up with when asked for Australian brands) -- this subsidiary is not Qantas. It is an Asian airline, and needs to be tailored for Asia. In any case, QF have specifically said it's not going to be Qantas, and I think the Sales Act might prohibit it...

Personally I don't actually really care what the name is -- just so long as they use a flying panda on the tail

Hardly. Though it is well known that the name originated from that acronym 90 years ago, it is now very definitely Qantas (note non-capitalisation of the rest of the letters). They fly to every state of Australia now, and are based in New South Wales. They've moved out of the place they grew up, and though they don't forget their roots, they are definitely not "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service".

However, I don't think Qantas Asia is a good name. Nor, however, do I like RedQ... I think airline names are reaching increasingly into the generic and bizarre (Peach, anyone?). I think having "Asia" in the name will limit them, as will having "Australia". I actually like the idea of building a brand around the word "Empire". They could be "Flying to an Empire of destinations". And you could "Be treated like Royalty".

After all, this new airline really is just the Emperor's New Clothes, isn't it?

RedQ doesn't sound like a LCC but it's in the middle between full service and LCC. It sounds ok and cool. I am looking forwards to seeing new livery!! I can imagine that it would be all red aircraft like ex-virgin blue livery!!

Not necessarily a problem, it depends on the rules in each jurisdiction and which jurisdictions are required.

RedQ sounds like a raunchy movie .... maybe with the recent hoohaa about that video they showed about "Human sexual interaction" is the only IFE available ....

:P

Anyway ... does anyone have any clue about what routes they would be doing, and is this a kind of weird response to Singapore Airlines trying to set-up that weird named Long-haul LCC, SCOOOT

God ... I should give up my job and just come up with these classy names for new LCCs

I think that is the point. RedQ sounds a little like an LCC name. I thought Jetstar would have been a good boutique, full service airline name like the service Virgin America offers, but instead they used that as their LCC.

I wish RedQ all the best and I hope that I have the opportunity to fly them someday!
