If anyone does it, it will probably be Spirit, as they've carved themselves a nice little niche in Atlanta and surprisingly lasted here, although some routes didn't pan out for them as well as they had hoped. I think that DL and AA probably aren't going to add too many additional flights, if they add any at all.

It would be more likely that AA and DL add flights on DFW-ATL, when the restrictions at Love Field allow Southwest to fly DAL-ATL. I could see the two adding flights 6 months ahead of WN's start date.

As said, it will be AA and DL if they even add capacity at all. They would only add capacity if they think it can be profitable. Those two with mega-hubs on both ends already offer a significant amount of flights each.

The question is how much of FL's ATL-DFW traffic is O&D versus connections over ATL.

Keep in mind (rough estimates on seat count)

FL - 6 flights, ~650 seats (I don't know what is 717 vs 73G), 16%
AA - 10 flights, ~ 1450 seats (all MD-80), 35%
DL - 12 flights, ~2000 seats (mix of MD-88, A320 & 757), 49%

DL & AA have a lot of levers to pull to add seats by either upgauging equipment or adding additional flights.

I remember when DL flew the L-1011 on the route. I flew on one from DFW to ATL (connecting on a 767 to BRU) in 1994, I mention that because I love the L-1011 and it was for me one of only 4 L-1011 flights in my life. I was so glad I did. I have not flown on a Tristar since. I knew then that it would probably be my last L-1011 flight. I remember spotting lots of L-1011s in ATL.

When DL had a hub at DFW, they offered many more seats than now between DFW and ATL. They flew many wide bodies between the cities including 747-232's, DC-10's both in the 70's and after the WA merger, L-1011's, and 767-232 and 767-232's. The DFW-HNL flights originated in ATL as well. After the hub was closed there were many commuters that had to travel between the two cities, when the DFW F/A and pilot bases were closed, and there still are today. Additionally, there were a few flights daily with mainline equipment, i.e., 727-232's and MD-88's, that operated via intermediate cities including MGM, BHM, MLU, SHV, JCK, JAN, and MSY.

Oh yes, I remember on Jan 2, 1997 - we had just arrived in ATL after flying from Zurich on a SR 747-300!! and we were supposed to overnight in ATL, but as my mom was ill, my Dad rebooked us on the last flight back to DFW from ATL on an L-10/11. I will never forget that decision as it was my first (and probably only ever) ride on the beast.

Unfortunately, I fell asleep the second I got to my seat and was shaken awake by my sister when we were parked at DFW...so sad, I had 0 recollection of this flight! Nevertheless, I do remember receiving a small bistro bag.

Funny how even as recent as 2001, DL had 767s flying DFWATL and DFWMCO or DFWFLL. Man, how much I miss the Delta hub at DFW
