AA Seeks To Strengthen Ties With LAN

Sun Sep 18, 2011 9:54 am

Last week, American Airlines, LAN's key partner in the North American market, and a founding member of the oneworld Alliance, mentioned that the merger between LAN and TAM "is not a threat" to American's interests in South America. On the contrary, AA views it as a "strengthening" of the alliance between AA and LAN, which has existed for almost 15 years. As for AA's investment plans of acquiring 460 new aircraft equates to the fact that LAN's customers will eventually be able to connect onto AA flights in the U.S. operated with the youngest fleet in the United States. AA will soon increase flights into LAN's HUB at SCL from 14 weekly flights to 20 weekly flights and plans on promoting Chilean Tourism next month with a new advertising campaign.

AA is not the only oneworld Alliance member that seeks to strengthen ties with LAN. Last July, Qantas Airways announced its new plan to capitalize on its international routes, which includes changing its only destination in South America. From April 2012, Qantas will discontinue services to Buenos Aires and will start flying nonstop to Santiago de Chile from Sydney. Qantas plans to use LAN's SCL HUB as its gateway to South America, where LAN will be able to offer QF passengers connections to/from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú and Uruguay.

Keeping LA in and getting JJ into oneworld is crucial for the alliance, even more than it was to keep JAL in. I'm glad to see LA strengthening ties to o/w carriers, I hope this indication of the future direction of LATAM.

Would be huge blow for OWto lose the new LANTAM, I would think star is courting them heavily now that they would be relatively weak in Latin America without TAM. Would be nice to see AA start an ORD to SCL, even better for LAN to start this.

Not sure of the viability of SCL-ORD. AA does not even serve GRU from ORD. Neither SCL or ORD are well-located geographically for connections from South America. Also, ORD-SCL would fly very close to MIA, a lot better placed gateway for connections to North America and substantially more O&D from SCL.

AA should have been flying ORD-GRU for a very long time, but JJ in oneworld would be another good reason to start.

IF LATAM beomes reality AA should fly 777 from ORD to Sao Paulo(GRU).

LAN will most likely open a new route to Chicago O'Hare from its hub at LIM, LAN has significant potential for growth. LAN is the fourth airline in the world in terms of market value and the first in West:

With the merger, is there an actual possibility of them leaving OW for Star or is it just hype?

JJ and AA used to partner and G3 and AA partner now. Not sure how much more persuasion AA would need to launch ORD-GRU.

Typical AA mind-set...LAN and TAM will utilize LIM as a primary hub for flights to Central America, North America, and the Caribbean. More flights to the LIM hub particularly from cities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc. equates to flights to North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Well then, LAN better put up or shut up. Ive heard rumors of ORD-LIM for a few years with nothing.

I dont really care because its not a flight I would use anyway, but when a rumor is repeated for years with nothing to back it up, Im skeptical.

LAN has over 50 wide-body a/c on order. Where do you think they will be deployed, on regional and domestic routes? LIM is one of the fastest growing airports in South America and will become major hubs for OW and Star Alliance, (that is if LAN remains in OW).

I think it would be great for Chicago and South America since LAN would be the only South American airline operating into ORD when LAN eventually comes to ORD.
