AA 777 In MSP Today

Tue Sep 20, 2011 3:25 am

Hi all!

I was doing some stuff outside at around 5 PM and I look up in the sky and right above me I see a huge 777 flying out of MSP, it didn't look like a Delta belly but couldn't make the airline. When I got home I checked Flight Aware, and I saw it was a Narita-ORD diversion.

Does anyone now why?

It was pretty cool seing a 777 here!

It was a MX diversion I believe.

Lucky the crew didn't time out!

Yeah!, no kidding!

I was also thinking if it was mechanical it seems that they decided to deviate to Mpls based on the flight aware map, somewhere over western Manitoba, didn't it make more sense to deviate to Fargo or Winnipeg? Instead of flying all the way to Mpls? and if they could make it to Mpls, why couldn't they make it to Chicago? I'm not complaining I'm just asking   Or perhaps the 777 is too big for FAR or YWG?

I think a 777 could do fine out of FAR's 9000 foot runway. KFAR is used a lot for testing of various commercial types. I've seen the 777 and the 764 there doing touch and gos.

Maybe it had to do with customs issues...FAR not having much capacity in that regard.

Would you believe..... a failure with one of the in-flight entertainment system cooling fans? Caused a smell of smoke in the cabin which caused the diversion. Fan was disabled (so it wouldn't run = no more smoke) in MSP and replaced once the plane got to ORD.
