Icelandair, future service to DUB?

Wed Sep 21, 2011 10:44 pm

Does anyone know if icelandair has evaluated a service from KEF to DUB ? Despite the obvious economic troubles on both sides it seems to be an interesting option for them given their many North American destinations.

Icelandair, future service to DUB?

I'm not sure about Icelandair themselves but Iceland Express announced and subsequently dropped BFS and DUB last year before operations started.

KEF-DUB has always seemed like an obvious route to me, especially given the GLA and MAN routes have operated successfully for years. They are not the same market but a close match when compared to DUB. Perhaps the 757 may be a little too much aircraft for DUB but I would have thought that Irish and US originating traffic for connections could probably suit FI. I guess the low yield weekender traffic (Iceland became a hot Euro weekend destination quite some time ago) is more Iceland Express territory but EI have also shown little interest in the route. I often wondered if this was to avoid FI retaliating by starting the route themselves and stealing some EI US traffic, something FI have been very good at in Scandinavia with SK.
Next Flight: DUB-BOS (EI), BOS-DEN-PDX (SWA), SEA-BOS (AS)

Dublin was mostly served served by charters in the past, Icelandic shoppers coming to shop when Ireland was a much cheaper country.
Can't see this happening anytime soon.

DUB's time may not be now, but I'm intrigued to ponder where FI may be looking next to in Europe. Perhaps NCL? DME? A Baltic destination? They already have Scandinavia covered, and Iceland Express seems to have WAW sown up. Any other ideas?
