LH A380 To Fly MUC-JFK In Dec 2011

Thu Sep 22, 2011 2:31 pm

http://presse.lufthansa.com/meldunge...011/september/22/article/2005.html

Lufthansa is to fly an A380 on scheduled flights from MUC to JFK for one week in December. Although this may be connected to increased demand due to Christmas shopping, which is cited as a reason in the press release, this might just be a PR stunt.
Flying the A380 on scheduled services in December makes LH the first airline to operate scheduled A380 flights from Munich before EK commences A380 service on one of the daily flights on January 1st.

I guess they just don't have enough destinations to send the 380 to at the moment, so they put it on the MUC-JFK route. And of course to make some good PR for LH and their 380...

Christmas shopping? Do a lot of people fly to another city across an ocean just for Christmas shopping?

Yes, and the per capita income in Munich is high and the US$ is low and people are crazy. And they have to pay VAT and eventually duty, depending on what they bought,m for anything over € 400 something. But if they buy a lot, declare it properly here and benefit on cheaper prices it can be a bargain.

But I bet that this is a run on who's first with scheduled A380 services from MUC. Let's not get beaten on the home turf.

Maybe LH is testing regular A380 service ex MUC?

The Irish also do it in droves! A lot less now, since the recession, but it's still a strong trade. Bargains to be had, especially with the exchange rate!

Maybe this is the PR stunt people are saying it is, and maybe it is testing the route for the A380 (although there should theoretically be computer simulations for this). In any event, I'm quite excited about seeing two LH A380's at JFK!

Yes. A lot of the leisure traffic to the US, and originating in Europe is driven by the dirt cheap retail prices that Europeans find in the US, especially in the apparel market. Just as a basic point of reference: A pair of Levi's jeans in Europe will set you back about 100 Euros. At today's exchange rate that's about $140. The same pair of jeans here in the US costs about $30-$40.

Isn't the regular JFK A380 flight switching back to A330/A340 for the winter though?

Still, you can get excited for Singapore, and I think KE too, right?

Lufthansa director Carsten Spohr (responsible for passenger services) talked about this in an interview in today's printed edition of Süddeutsche Zeitung. He also said that passengers and crews are equally pleased by the A380 and that LH is currently negotiating another order with Airbus. I assume they will take some or all of their options.

Sorry, no usable link. The online version has only a very brief summary in German:

http://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaf...ill-sms-an-bord-erlauben-1.1147245

About the SMS: they plan to allow SMS, but no phone calls on board. I think this has been known for a while.

Could be. You never know. Still a lot of 380s on order and options for it as well.

Or getting ready for the EK flight in MUC... But I somehow doubt that LH will assist with the introduction of the A380 service from EK to MUC

Yes. Starting end of October, back to 346 and 343/ 333...
Summer 2012? Not decided yet.

They will hardly use the same gate?! I suppose EK will use T1.
Nevertheless yes, it brings some routine into handling the EK A380, as soon as it flies daily.

MUC doesn't have much routing with 380s yet. So this week could help the guys in MUC for sure to be prepared for the EK service.

I couldn't find the dates when the 380 will fly from MUC to JFK. I guess it will be well promoted and loads will be pretty good as well.

Would be great to see LH's A380 on scheduled flights from MUC. Hopefully D-AIMB "München" will return after being named there in July 2010:

Yes, EK will use T1 - and LH's A380 already made its debut at T2 last year.

If I remember correctly, the EK A380 already visited MUC once in the past as well.
However overall the LH flights won't contribute to the EK flights much as they operate out of 2 completely separate Terminals. One of the gates at T1 is currently getting the upgrade to have a 3rd finger  I'm guessing that in the 1 week of LH A388 ops in MUC they'll simply use a finger from an adjacent gate for door 1R or so as they did for the scenic flight

Flying international just to go shopping ain't something in my budget, but with $1.40 + for 1 euro, you get dirt cheap bargains on plenty of items, especially electronics, or retail. Although NY state does have some sales tax. So imagine that in NH...
At least until that hotel bill comes up, and then, shopping might just get cheaper staying home!
This said, excellent exchange rate for Europeans certainly is an incentive to combine that trip to NYC thought about for too long and good shopping deals, so people who had been thinking about going there would take advantage of it to go shopping there instead of at home, because otherwise, NYC is anything but cheap for cost of living...

Side note, I've never been searched by EU customs, except once at AMS. Guess when that was.... Dec 23rd. 2 years ago when euro was $1.50, and I before being searched, I was asked where I was coming from, to which I answered United States... Though I was not on a shopping trip since I live on W side of the pond, but my EU passport was suggesting so. So, there must be some folks out there who go buy lots of cheap stuff and try to not declare it.

Ironically, other way around, back from an AMS flight, I was asked by US customs for tulip bulbs. I guess we all know what it means, right?  cloudnine

You would be amazed at how many "Xmas shopping" package deals are advertized (and sold) at European travel agencies. The deals are extremely good and they pay nowhere near "retail" rate for NYC hotels. NY sales tax is no deterrent when you're paying 20+% VAT on top of already heavily taxed import goods. Go over to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets on any weekday and you'll see bus loads of European tourists.

Indirectly they will. Airport ramp workers might just be able to get used to the big aircraft. I know, MUC has a lot of A346 which are even longer, but push-back truck drivers or aircraft clean-up or de-icing crews now find the chance to use the LH A380 as "training ground" of the EK service.
I can't believe I just wrote this sentence. It completely neclects the greatness of LH
