FAA Fines Cessna $2.4mil For Production Defects

Thu Sep 22, 2011 5:19 pm

The FAA today proposed a $2,425,000 civil penalty against Cessna Aircraft Company for failure to follow FAA approved quality control systems in manufacturing wings and 82 additional parts.

FAA alleges that during production audit test performed by FAA test pilot, a Cessna Corvalis suffered a failure of the wing with a 7-foot section of carbon composite coming apart separating from the aircraft forcing an emergency landing in Independence Kansas.
FAA determined that excessive humidity during manufacturing prevented the wing bonded materials from curing properly effecting 13 specific aircraft built between December 2009 and December 2010.
