DL 777 At Imperial Terminal LAX

hey everyone,

I was driving near the Imperial Terminal at Lax and noticed a DL 777 (didn't know if it was an -LR) parked there. Does anyone know why its there?

Should have been the -LR. It comes in from SYD at 720a and leaves for Haneda at 655p. They remote park it during the day as those gates are needed throughout the day.

I saw a UA 777 there once. That aircraft was being loaded with cargo before it was towed to a regular passenger gate.

[Edit: I did not see DeltAirlines response before my post so I did not realize this was a daily occurrence for the DL 77L, which is why I thought this a/c might have been waiting for some cargo. The UA aircraft I saw was a one-time event.]

Hhm. Why are they not taking it for spin during the day? Wouldn't a LAX-ATL or LAX-MSP rotation work? They used to do LAX-ATL on the LR a while back. Why are they not doing it anymore?

They do still fly LAX-ATL a few times a week with it.

Between crew rest requirements, costs, maintenance, etc., it makes more sense for Delta to let that plane rest for a bit instead of adding extra flying in.

but when i passed by, it was already 6:15pm

Drove by yesterday and saw the same thing. Seems the SYD and HND birds were already at gates, which made for a total of 3 777 a/c on the ground at LAX yesterday.

Domestic legs on the 777 exist in order to support operational needs by repositioning aircraft between gateway cities.

There's no way to consistently recover incremental operating expense in domestic markets, which is why DL 777s sit all day at LAX and ATL. Lengthy ground sits at a hub between international arrival/departure banks is hardly a unique practice. AA 777s sit for long stretches at DFW and MIA, as do UA 777s and 744s at SFO.

You should see EZE and SCL during the day at the remote parking stands. It looks like you are back in the good ole US of A, there are so many US based widebodies just sunbathing.
