Restricted Parking Space At PAE?

Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:28 pm

Hi all,

for those in the know, I was looking at this picture earlier:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-I...eing-787-837-Dreamliner/1989677/L/

I believe Boeing is struggling to store the vast amount of B787´s awaiting certification / delivery, so what are all those smaller aircraft doing there?
Do they belong to Boeing or are they private?
Is it expensive / complicated to store a private aircraft at such a busy field?

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I´d noticed this before in pictures of that area.

Regards,

I think they are private aircraft not part of Boeing. They are at tie downs that are leased out by the airport or one of the FBO's there. I think the most difficult thing about parking there is getting a spot. The shortest waiting period is months for a hanger.

The 152s and the 206 in the picture belong to Regal Air - http://www.regalair.com - one of the FBOs & popular flight schools at PAE. In fact it was refreshing to see these aircraft because I did my initial training.

Are the 787s blocking the crosswind runway 11x29?

PAE is not actually a very busy airport. Boeing only has about a half dozen flights on a busy day. The rest of the traffic is private. There is flight training that occurs at the airport, so it is frequent to see Cessnas working the pattern. There are also some private airplanes at the airfield permanently.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

There are small aircraft all over the place at PAE. As others have pointed out, there are several popular flight training facilities based at the airport. Most of them use the smaller runway (34Rx16L) to stay out of the way of the heavies, but that's also partially because many of the FBOs are closer to that runway than they are to the main runway, though it's not uncommon to see them depart/arrive from 34Lx16R. Check out some satellite images of PAE to get an idea, the Google Earth/Maps imagery is pretty current.

They are indeed. The photo provided by the OP was taken from the parking lot adjacent to the Regal Air facility at PAE looking south towards the ATS hangar across 11x29. Unless I'm mistaken, 11x29 has been closed and used as temporary 787 storage for the better part of a year now.

Don't forget the various WN/5X/AS/HA and other aircraft arriving for scheduled maintenance at ATS! Your point is quite correct though--PAE isn't really as busy as one might be led to believe by looking at the front page of a.net. There's plenty of interesting stuff to see if you visit, but it's not like the pattern is loaded throughout the day.

Yes.

Correct. 11x29 has a giant lighted "X" on it at the intersection with the main runway and is completely closed. It's got a mix of 747's and 787's parked on it.

There were six 787s and four 747s on 11-29 a few days ago.
