Qatar Orders More A380's, Recieves 100th Plane

Sun Oct 02, 2011 6:31 am

News 1: Qatar Airways CEO Mr. Al-Baker has ordered more A380's but will announce them at next month's Dubai Airshow.

News 2: Qatar Airways has taken delivery of its 100th jet, a Boeing 777-200LR fresh from Seatle with a special sticker commemorating the achievement. I cannot paste it here now, as I am in my work computer.

News 3: QR definetly wont order 747-8 pax version, but DID NOT rule out 747-8 version, which Cargolux has in its fleet from October 12.

Quote:
The new order for a "few more" superjumbos will be on top of the five aircraft that the airline previously ordered.

Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, said they will officially announce the deal in the upcoming Dubai Airshow.

"We ordered the A380s for a specific reason and we found the number we initially ordered to be insufficient. So we ordered a few more," Akbar Al Baker told Gulf News in Seattle on Friday.

Article continues below

Al Baker was at the Boeing plant in Seattle to receive the airline's 100th aircraft - a Boeing 777-200LR (long range).

Any idea how many A380s? Could it be the 10 unidentified? I predict an announcement soon of new destinations in the US, LAX, SFO, or ORD (one, or two of the three)

No matter what QR detractors say, this is an achievement. Congrats to QR and looking forward to QR's new routes like OSL, EBB, CKG, GYD, TBS.

Great news for the A380 program! First LH and now QR. And who knows EK as well at the Dubai Airshow.

Congrats to QR! 5 always did seem a strange number, now they just need to get the new airport in DOH up and running ASAP!

I think we may also see QR in PER and SYD (ADL as a long shot for first mover advantage!) soon.

I do not think we will see the A380 in Australia soon sadly, they simply carry too much cargo on the 77LR atm. I think we still are a fair way off seeing a 773ER upgrade down here as it is.

It is an achievement indeed. Somehow flying EK never appealed to me in the same way as flying QR still does. I have yet to fly either one of them, so this is just a gut feeling. If I will fly one of the Gulf carriers for sure I will start the "try-outs" with QR.  .

Of course some extra A380's gives them even more appeal. I am sure they will utilize them well.

Even in fields so huge like VLA, it seems more technical arguments "That bird is too big for us", "We are betting rather on increasing frequencies" can come to a second place when : "The race has started!!!. idiot is the last!!" appears.

No wonder that could be Airbus' main calculation when they launched A380.

IIRC they've said it's going to be their only aircraft with F while the rest of the fleet will be J/Y. Aside from that I don't think so...

And I was never aware of QR publicly showing interest in the 747-8 Intercontinental, so the real surprise would have been them stating they were interested in adding it.

Is there a list of once potential customers for the 747-8 anywhere? Be interesting to see which airlines originally expressed an interest in it.

It's unbelievable that QR are ready to take even more planes of a version they don't even have yet. Those A380 operators need to keep their mouths quiet or everyone will want them. The message that they are performing very well is obviously out there. Proof of the pudding and all that.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

The Engine Alliance engine seems to be doing okay on the A380 in terms of fuel burn.

And EASA recently proposed an airworthiness directive which would require carriers to install ventilation holes in some of the pylon panels for A380s equipped with the Trent 900 due to heat build-up which could result in a fire if a fuel leak occurred.

I too am curious. How did they go this long 'stealth' or undecided? It takes a while to buy the parts for an engine (long lead typically 18 months for parts that 'last the life' of the engine and thus aren't stockpiled).

The aircraft rattles the windows in his house when it flies overhead because it's so loud... Nobody is suggesting that 747s have poorly fitted windows that rattle.

When the New Doha International Airport opens next year, it is going to mark a very significant step for Qatar Airways. It will be a huge difference, and well see it ranked 5 stars by Skytrax (the airport). The number of A380 gates that are due to open in the new DOH has been increased. It seems to me that most of the gates can hold A380, even though it says 6 gates designated for A380s.

The New Airport might see increased passenger load and might as well change or make QR increase its a/c orders for more 777. I want QR to increase their 777 to at least 50 planes from the current 40! Perhaps its a dream that will turn into reality somday.

While there is no specific unidentified order for 10 A388s on the Airbus O&D spreadsheet, Airbus do have an MoU for 10 undisclosed frames that was acknowledged by them at Le Bourget, I believe that is what QatarA340 is referring to.

Airbus has disclosed that it has signed a tentative agreement for 10 A380s with an undisclosed customer.

The airframer said the agreement amounted to a memorandum of understanding for the double-deck type, and that it was potentially worth $3.75 billion at list prices.

Chief operating officer for customers John Leahy said Airbus would not normally mention an undisclosed customer but had been prompted by Boeing's similar announcement of an undisclosed order for 15 Boeing 747-8s.

"It might be the same customer," he said.

Sources have told Flightglobal that Hong Kong Airlines is the carrier behind the 747-8 passenger aircraft deal.

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...closed-tentative-a380-deal-358732/

They appear not to be for QR though it would not surprise if the carrier was looking at a similar number of frames.

Well, you must have been flying on a counterfeit, as I just checked Boeing's website and all 747's delivered in 2006 and 2007 were freighters. If you were flying on a freighter then I think we can discount your complaint; I am aware of problems with counterfeit parts, but this is the first I've heard of whole counterfeit airplanes.

I bet it was fun using the oxygen masks though.

Never had a problem with the 744, it is a sound plane. The 380 is a much nicer and quieter ride, but maybe Boeing missed the insulation not glue!

No.

Sometimes the lack of a smilie says much more than the copious use of numerous smilies.

Is QR going to announce new routes for the World Hubs conference currently ongoing? Does anybody know if there is a QR press conference coming up?

This is awesome. When is Qatar supposed to start A380 service?

IIRC we're looking at late 2012 but it will mean that we should see some patrs convoyed soon if that's to be met.

Oh geez... Did someone fly a "Boewing 747-700"? The easiest way to determine if the aircraft is genuine is to get into the cockpit and look at the clock. If the clock hands move smoothly, its the real thing. If they are jerky, its a fake.

BTW... Congrats to QR and Airbus!
