No More Warm Nuts On AA In First On Some Routes

Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:21 am

I flew AA MIA-MSY last week in F and was shocked that AA no longer serves warm nuts in F on this flight. Instead, we got a prepackaged pretzel mix of some sort.

I remember flying this route just a few years ago and we were actually served warm nuts and a full, hot dinner!

When did AA stop the warm nuts and (I presume they still serve them on flights longer than xxx miles / y hours)? What flights still get warm nuts?

Disgusting isn't it? They have to cut costs to pay for all those early retirements.

I have gotten the warm nuts on multiple flights in the last couple months, on short routes such as DFW-PHX. Could it be that this could have been that this flight ran out, or was not catered properly?

Well, given that we were going out from MIA, you would think that the hub wouldn't have run out of nuts (the edible type, that is!).

I am flying SFO-ORD in First class this month and hope I get warm nuts   but not sure since it says "snack/brunch" on my flight. Otherwise maybe the Admirals club at SFO has nuts prior to my flight?

I have read that many US domestic routes have chipped away so much from their first class and business class service to the point where only the seat comfort is the only thing that separates it from flying coach.

Flights over one hour have warm nuts. For whatever reason, your flight didn't have them.

Snack/brunch is identical to a lunch meal, just coded for flights departing outside of traditional lunch/dinner windows. It's a full meal.

Have AA disabled the heated seats in First then? On the bright side, I heard that they're bad for male fertility.

Is AA removing ovens from narrowbodies?

That could be the reason why warmed nuts are no longer available on some flights - lack of equipment to heat them.

Ovens were removed from the coach galleys. They still serve hot food in first. I flew ORD-SEA-ORD in first this summer and had a cheeseburger for lunch. Warm nuts were served before lunch.

My MIA-MSY flight is about 650 miles, about 1 hour 35 minutes. Perhaps if the flight is under 2 hours, you just get the crummy prepackaged pretzel mix.

I have always wondered, if a pax declares to the F/As prior to flight that they have a peanut or other nut allergy, is there a protocol to not disburse nuts on that flight?

I know some people are extremely allergic to nuts and have to carry an Epipen (Epinephrine Injection) at all times.

Lucky you! Me and my cold nuts are sitting in an cubicle in an office building, right after walking across campus to the cafe and back on a brisk New England fall day! However, it's nice and warm in the office, so my cold nuts are becoming warm nuts again, and it feels soooo good!

Nobody can resist my Sweddy Balls. It's a secret Sweddy family recipe . I didn't realize people enjoyed the warm nuts that much. Looks like I am missing out due to my allergy! But then again I really enjoy the cookies on DL. Would probably rather have them anyways.

People...AA is still serving nuts. By the time warm nuts are heated up the plane would be landing... Typically on flight 1.5 hours and under, they give you the Premium (MSG-loaded) Snack Mix. Its pretty much always been this way.

I guess it does depend on flight duration. Not long ago I was in F ANC - DFW - JFK and there were plenty of warm nuts. Unlimited refills too, if you wanted them.

AA hasn't served meals on flights under two hours for well over a decade with the exception of a few key short business routes like ORDPHL and ORDLGA which still have meals, so no, they didn't serve a meal a few years ago on this route.

MIAMSY gets warm nuts service or hot cookie service. Why it didn't on your particular flight, who knows, it's over the 1 hour window.

Nothing has been taken away. The thread title is factually wrong. The only significant change to meal service on AA in the past two years has been additions: domestic dinner is now four course and Eagle addd meals/nuts with first class cabins. With the exception of US, American carriers have been adding to their domestic premium cabins in the past few years.

Well then, MSY-MIA must be one of those "key short business routes" because I definitely got a hot dinner on their evening flight, and that's going back to about 2005.

AA serves "warm nuts" in First Class on segments more than 90 minutes, i.e. STL-DCA on non meal hours, plus the baked cookie. So STL-DFW and STL-ORD which are scheduled for less than 90 minutes, they serve the premium mix, which is pretty good also. They serve a hot meal in First on 90+ scheduled flight segment, but some exceptions i.e. cereal and bagel/biscuit on STL-DCA but omelet and cereal choice STL-LAX or STL-MIA. This is just an example from my experience. If the flight is listed "Refreshment" that will be the premium mix on the shorter flights and the hot nuts/cookie on the longer non meal hours. If the flight is listed "Snack" that is a light meal, i.e. continental breakfast or salad for lunch and then for the other longer flights they will list " breakfast/lunch/dinner" in which they will offer two appropriate meal hour choices, one 'hot and one cold" choice plus warm nuts and the baked cookie for lunch/dinner. Confused?

Sorry, but the thread title is misleading and completely incorrect. While I'm sure it was unintentional, it's actually exactly a great example of how baseless rumors get started. AA has never served warm nuts on all flights. Your flight could have been the victim of a temporary catering shortage(it happens every day, to every airline somewhere on all those tens of thousands of flights) or perhaps the oven tray had an issue.

Quoting Stitch (Reply 16):

They removed ovens from coach on the S80 years ago, but otherwise all the planes have working ovens. 738s, for example, still have hot meal service in Y on flights to Central and near South America.

I've been served warm nuts on DFW-AUS one time, but it was only because the F/A had a ton of extra stock on hand and decided to offer them to the passengers. Sometimes the F/As decide to 'wing it'...

This must be very recent because I was served a full meal - beef carpaccio, olive salad, dinner roll, chocolate moose, pinot nior and several vodka tonics. All of that on a 1 hour flight.
