BA @ IAH

Thu Oct 05, 2000 3:17 am

Hello,

I would be interested to track down the history of BA operations at Houston.
Could anyone help me with some old timetables to see when they switched aircraft and upgraded frequencies please?

Hi Alain,

Up until the late 1990's, BA was operating the DC10-30 to
IAH once daily from London Gatwick. They now fly a daily
Boeing 747-400 and have added a second flight three or 4
times per week with a Boeing 777. The reason is simple.
Continental flies twice a day with the 777 and therefore is
offering a more flexible schedule.

BA operations at IAH are based at the International Terminal
designated D, which used to be known as the Mickey Leland
Terminal. It opened in 1990 and serves Continental's inter-
national arrivals from all points and departures to Tokyo, Paris,
London, and Sao Paolo, as well as the ops of KLM, Air France,
Aeromexico, TACA, and all other foreign flag carriers.

Yep, ContinentalEWR is right. I gotta add, Houston Intercontinental's Terminal D (Formerly known as International Arivals Building, or IAB) is the best Int'l Terminal I have ever seen!!!!!

It really is a nice facility. I used to operate international flights from IAH, but back when I did, Terminal D was not constructed yet. Recently, while operating flight 217 back in August, an rush-hour 757 from EWR-IAH, the regular concourses was completely full, so we received instructions to taxi to gate D-6A, which we did. I was excited for this as I have never been into this terminal before. After completing shutdown, we walked up the unusually long jetway to the terminal. Inside, it was almost as nice as the one at EWR. Pleasantly surprised, I looked around to admire the building before going to my hotel. I snapped a few photos of the terminal, but they came out poorly. Here are some nice ones I found:

No, BA operates one daily flight in a 744 to Gatwick, along with a second flight in the 777 3 times a week. The IAH-LGW route is a high capacity route. CO also operates 2 daily 777 flights on the route.

I have flown in/out of IAH's international terminal several times. It's a really nice terminal.

Question

Overall, which airline ferries more passengers between the two cities? BA's one daily 747 and few times weekly 777 are almost equivalent to two daily 777s. So which on'es more successful? What about load factors?

It's hard to say. I would think CO's load factors are likely to be higher since IAH is their biggest hub.

Houston is a major transit point and CO's ops there
surpass 520 or so daily flights. However, BA has a
pretty decent feed at Gatwick too. Basically, it is
not relevant who has the higher loads. There is a
lot of room for two players in this market. Houston
is the fourth biggest US city after NY, LA, and
Chicago and London is....well London is London.
Need I say more?

Hiya ContinentalEWR, I will be flying your airline Continental in a couple weeks to New Orleans VIA IAH, and I am looking forward to it. I have never had a bad flight on Continental & doubt I ever will.

P.S. Why doesent Continental, or BA fly the IAH-LGW Route?

BA In Houston - Their TX Hub

I know that BA has served IAH for quite some time. They have flown 744s there for at least the last few years. That is their largest operation in TX bcuz DFW is too locked up w/ AA competition.
