Could London Gatwick Expand?

Sat Oct 08, 2011 3:56 pm

So I was reading the article about the proposed train system between LHR and LGW and got to wondering if Gatwick could expand. I checked the forum and couldn't find much information so I wanted to get more insight. I have flown in to both and found that Gatwick does seem to have more room for expansion than Heathrow as a lot of space seems to be wasted. Is it possible to build an additional runway or 2? I like the idea of having one as the intercontinental airport and one as a domestic/european airport as well with that added rail link due to slot restrictions. Is this even a viable idea?

They can't have an additional runway until at least 2019 or so. Given that they'd need planning permission plus time to prepare and construct it, they'd need to submit proposals sometime in the next 6 months to meet that 2019 opening. Then we have the slight problem that all main political parties in the UK are not that keen on expanding the aviation sector by addiing runway capacity. It's more a case of better utilisation of what we've got.

It can expand but there is a ruling that nothing can happen before 2019. I think this was an old agreement between West Sussex CC and BAA in 1979.

As BAA no longer owns Gatwick, I wonder if that still stands. Although I expect it was included as part of the sale agreement...

I imagine that the agreement "runs with the land" as I think the expression is in English law. In other words, the agreement regarrding the land stands, whoever may own it.

Indeed they could basically start planning now and calmly go for a 2019 openning... Just out of curiosity, has it been even considered? The armchair airport planner that I am would build the new runway southwest of the current one, far appart/offset enough to allow parallel independant operations. And in the middle, build a long terminal or concourse ala MAD. Link it to the intertermlinal rail connection.

I think it could make a pretty decent airport. LGW is already easy(ish) to get to from London, and is the airport of choice for all the Southeast so its catchment area is huge....

When you say it is the airport of choice for all the Southeast, you haven't forgotten that there is another busy airport west of London, have you?

Bristol?

Yes indeed... I meant South East of London. That's how it's done in France... Chartres is almost considered in the South West part of the country, because it's south west of Ze Capitale (just a little exageration here but it isn't far from the truth!)

I guess the problem with my plan is, you'd end up with another Heathrow. Whereas STN could grow past that, I guess with a lot of environmental dramma though, but it could go to 4 runways and the terminals that would allow a megahub operation. Beside the new airport option ( NAO ! ) , Stansted is the only sensible chance for the UK to get the hub its deserves.

I recall the new owners of Gatwick making a firm commitment not to bulild another runway, so it looks like we are stuck with a single runway airport, or rather an airport with 2 runways close together, so that only one can be used at a time!

It is called a covenant and would be included in the deeds for the land. In purchasing the deeds, you agree to adhere to the covenants although there are ways for them to be removed. However, as the covenant is with the county council it is most likely immovable.

I would hazard a guess that the return on investment of a 2nd runway and likely new terminal construction is the biggest reason that they are running with what they have. The airport, whilst slot control, is not at capacity for either runway movements or passenger numbers per hour and without the previous Bermuda restrictions, is there really enough demand for all that capacity. There are plenty of times during the day where an airline could come into LGW. The only full times are the first wave departures.

No. Putting another runway at Heathrow is the only sensible chance.
