Love this BOAC one  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuoV0mfxdUI

Has anyone access to another famous BOAC one featuring Millie Fisher? I worked with her after she stopped flying. She was a really classy lady and full of amazing stories about her "glory days" on BOAC VC-10s & 707s

I love this AA ad from the 1970s. It really projects the professionalism, glamor, and excitement of the airline industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd4gAHmRJWo

This DL ad from 1986 (the "We Love To Fly And It Shows" campaign) was cute and memorable:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLrg41rPjU4

I wish I could find the one from the same campaign that featured the res agent taking the call from the military guy using the payphone on base. After he's done, he hands the phone to the next guy. The agent ends up booking flights for everyone on base. After she disconnects, the supervisor asks if she's taken many calls. She replies, "Just one."

I totally agree; I think that AA ad was one of the most feel-good airline commercials ever.

My all-time favorite, the United "Nancy" commercial from 1982:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeXrMRf25U8&feature=related
The "Fly the Friendly Skies" brand was at its peak!

And this one from a bit later, which is equally adorable:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kpsRtMgVY0&feature=related

Finally, just before PSA was completely absorbed by USAir, it had the following commercial, which included its best jingle to date (IMO): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ4wM9-QNQ0&feature=related.

Too bad ad jingles are so rare now; the really good ones truly helped shaped airlines' identity in the '70s, '80s and early '90s: United, USAir, Delta, American, in particular. I loved them all. OK, I love jingles in general. And I obviously have a soft spot for doe-eyed flight attendants.

I'm quite fond of this 1966 Ozark commercial, which seems like something right out of Austim Powers, except in black and white!

This one's not a commercial, it's a promo for the Australian ABC network back in 1972, featuring preperations for a TAA (now QF domestic) flight. Both TAA & QF were government owned til the mid 90's, so no issues with using the state-owned TV network to 'promote' an airline...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F58hRkcL78k&feature=relmfu

Another TAA commercial from 1984, promoting their 3-class cabins. First class died out domestically here sometime in the 90's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQcfr1NjzkA&feature=related

TAA was renamed Australian Airlines in 1986 (proably in preperation for privitisation - they ended up being merged into QF in the early 90's.) The 'back to normal' line in the ad would place it just after the 1989 pilots stike

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uVWegkjb9Q&feature=related

A Qantas commercial from the early 70's, showing the bar in the 747 upper deck - this would have been a cinema commercial, being in colour & it's length. No colour TV here until 1975...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or_z7s0jb88&feature=related

And finally, another Australian cinema commercial from the early 70's, this one for Pan Am. What more would you want in an airline ad. A hot blonde pax, travelling SYD-LHR via Bali, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Beiruit & Rome. A trip that would have been VERY costly back then, this chick was no 'hippy trail' traveller.... One of the youtube comments puts it perfectly - 'Who is this chick and who gave her permission to live this fabulously......, and why didnt she take me with her? LOL'

The first Singapore Girl ad from Singapore Air. Any discussion of vintage airline ads would be incomplete without this. It is probably the most successful marketing campaign in the airline industry. Probably pretty sexist back then but a symbol of grace, class and elegance now.. SQ altered the whole competitive landscape of the commercial aviation industry and this was the marketing campaign that launched them. They consistently adhered to it as they went from a little unknown regional carrier back then into one of the most profittable airlines now.

And a little later...

What fascinates me more than anything else about this commercial is that they use the same "A Great Way to Fly" slogan. In fact they could practically re-run that commercial today. SQ are just that timeless!

As to the BOAC ad:

Flying then, classy.

Flying today: The crew up front is all paid 14K a year and may or may not be trained well* because the Rolex wearing professionals depicted were furloughed or forced into retirement only to have the pensions taken away, the crew in the passenger area is rude and tells you to hurry up and be seated, the guy with the snorkel and mask would be pulled as a potential terrorist and 10 passengers would complain to the airline about the baby crying. The stuffed bear would need to be checked baggage for an extra $150. A baby bottle? Is it gluten free, high fructose corn syrup free, enhanced with DHA and served in a voc compliant sterile bottle? Was the bottle warming fee of $15 paid? The seats would have 1/3rd of the width and 1/2 of the pitch. "On behalf of Captain Smith" would be replaced with "Come on y'all let's take a ride, and listen up to my seatbelt jive". Oh, and the flight engineer works for a cargo carrier or is depicted by a mannequin in the Smithsonian. To top it all off, the VC-10 on the route was replaced by 25 ERJ flights on the half hour.
