Hainan Airlines Pull Out Of South Asia In A Rush

Mon Oct 10, 2011 2:08 am

After cancelling Colombo which was to start from 18 October, they have now decided to end Kolkata service as well from 11 October after just four flights. CCU was nontop, CMB via Bangkok, both from Shenzhen using 737-800 four times weekly each.

Bombay was also planned with unofficial dates suggesting mid October launch but that was dropped too.

Not surprised. I don't understand why Hainan picked Shenzhen as the city to support their South Asia Route, bigger cities such as Hong Kong and Guangzhou already serve these location by Cathay Pacific and China Southern. Hainan barely provide any connecting flight out of Shenzhen, i couldn't see the feature of these routes at all.

But for CCU traffic there is not CZ or CX service, so Hainan were targetting passengers for Hong Kong with a free bus ride from SZX.

The free bus ride to only to the border of Hongkong, not to Hongkong. Its really complicated for passengers to transit like that, specially with luggage. Imagine you have to drag the luggage to clear two customs, two passport check and then takes another an hour to get home. I would pay little extra to transfer at Singapore or BKK.

Sad to hear that Hainan has cancelled all its South Asian routes. One can only assume that the market is just not big enough. The problem with Hainan is that they aim to compete internationally with the bigger players by launch secondary routes. Yet China - India is still a small market and secondary-secondary routes must rely on connection. Hainan itself is fairly big in China but SZX is just the wrong base. Any O&D will use HKG and for connection Hainan in SZX is eclipsed by Shenzhen airlines and CA. I'd suggest they use Haikou if they do return to this market - at least that's one of their main hubs and is on the 'right side' of China just like SZX.

This was a baffling decision by HU from the outset. Without connections, they would have been reliant on O&D traffic between CCU & SZX. No matter how nice the bus ride to the Hong Kong perimeter, it is not the same. The VFR & FIT travel base for CCU is in Europe & North America. However HU's flights to YYZ, SEA, BRU, TXL, BUD & ZRH go to PEK. It is the decision to connect CCU to SZX & not to PEK that doomed the route.

Also there are some curiosities in the article;

"prompting new entrant Qatar Airways to consider introducing larger aircraft and increasing its flight frequency."

This seems to be a rumour only as there is no source cited for this information. If you check the QR website it still states that the equipment is an A320, even from April of 2012.

"Cathay Pacific is set to resume services in the city after 41 years."

Did anyone tell CX? There is nothing to verify this information. CX does not even have an office in Kolkata as per their website

Hong Kong has higher taxes and mainland chinese citizens need visas to go there preventing them from benefiting from Hong Kong flights. However, HU has service through Hong Kong Airlines and Hong Kong Express.
