Nissan Commercial: Truck Saves Plane

Thu Oct 13, 2011 1:20 am

Nissan is showing a commercial with a Nissan Frontier "saving" an airplane with a landing gear problem. First of all, obviously it is fake.. the plane isn't real. The nose looks like a MD-XX, the tail looks like a 727. Also just happens to be cameras in the terminal while this is going on. Second, could a pickup truck actually save a plane in that situation?

Biggest question: Would this even be necessary? It isn't like a landing gear failure is that uncommon.

I guess another question would be is it wrong to sensationalize an airplane problem to advertise a commercial product?

That commercial is so dumb. How does advertising something your vehicle could in no way accomplish even be legal? At least not without Joe Isuzu.

I just saw the commercial on Discovery and my first thought was, there gotta be a post on A.net about it.

From what I can tell from the rest of the details it definitely seems like the intention was to make it a 727-200 but indeed it looks like a crossbreed with the MD-11 because they modeled the nose so inaccurately. If you look closely you can barely make out the attempt of squeezing in the eyebrow windows.

Indeed the story behind the commercial is quite awkward, in that type of situation the aircraft would simply skid on it's nose to a safe stop, like in this incident:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xghzX573wY

Also if that really happened that truck would have been crushed. There have many incidents where airliners smashed into cars, some even fatal, the SWA overrun comes to mind. It would be completely senseless and reckless to drive a vehicle out like that, furthermore if that really happened the plane should have executed a go-around and the driver would be arrested, right?

My first thought when I saw this was that, at the least, those tires would have blown. I'm sure they're not rated for high speeds under that type of load. The truck doesn't even have a 1-ton axle.

Also notice at the end of the video that the suspension isn't even under load. Anyone with a reasonable mind would know that the bed would be bottomed out.

The premise of the video is a passenger in the terminal is filming with a camcorder. In this video, supposed to be the follow-up news story, they interview the same girl in the blue sweater along with her partner who was supposed to be filming it. It even says "Actual witness video".

As for the aerial view, the pilots would have radioed ahead that the landing gear was malfunctioning. So it could be possible for news helicopters to be waiting on the scene, similar to the Jet Blue incident.
The 747: The hands who designed it were guided by god.

Has anyone here figured out that it is an advertisement and meant to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek? It is the same for Nissan's other advertisement where the Frontier is pushing a dune buggy up a steep hill when it was stuck. Critiquing this advertisement on its merits is about the same as critiquing those goofy E-Trade commercials where the baby is talking.

BTW... I have a 2011 Frontier and it is great!    I use it to bring back moon rocks, lost treasure from the RMS Titanic, and once while it was parked in the garage it came up with a cure for cancer all by itself.

Looks like ONT has been pretty busy with filming commercials lately! The 722 sitting at the gate in the background is the owned by LAWA and used as a movie prop. It's usually sitting over at the old terminal. The (very) computer generated one in distress appears to be modeled after it.
Every flight counts.

It seems they film everything there! I seen credit card companies, rental car companies, phone companies, Southwest's new ads. They have the whole east end of Terminal 2 to use for filming. The old Delta gates. They also film a lot in the older terminal.

Well yeah, that's kind of the point of that ad. They have a whole series of ads where the truck survives things no real life vehicle including the Nissan Frontier could possibly survive -- they ran one years ago where a woman pushes her ex's truck off a cliff only to have it land on it's tires at the bottom completely unscathed. It looks like they're trying to say the Nissan Frontier is like the Chuck Norris of trucks.

Oh, I HATE this commercial! It's so fake and impossible, for several reasons.

For one, I challenge the Frontier to get up to the 727-100's approach speed of 124 knots in 1000-1500 ft. Additionally, the static load on the nose landing gear (most forward CG) is 16,300 lb. That truck would break with that amount of weight. Get rid of that commercial, Nissan. It's ridiculous.

Lastly, they should have used an A320, ala the JetBlue landing incident at LAX a few years back.

Sadly I had coworkers asking if it was possible. I almost couldn't bring myself to answer.

Then why even start a thread about this then?

Is the answer not obvious?

Common sense is rare nowadays apparently.

It's Southwest's favorite airport for commercials. I guess it's because a) it's close to LA where lots of ad agency is located and has a large film industry, b) have a decent SWA traffic/air traffic and c) WAY underutilized terminal. Seriously I have never had to wait more tha 5 minutes at ONT for anything. (Check-in/security)

Just funny to see my old favorite airport turn up in commercials over and over again.
