Qatar Cargo Expands To ATL, IAH, YYZ

Thu Oct 13, 2011 3:51 pm

Qatar Airways Cargo has announced a major expansion of its North American operations:

http://www.qatarairways.com/qa/en/pr...ressrelease_pressrelease_20111009b

In less than a month, the "Arabian oryx" will begin gracing the ramps of ATL and YYZ; freighter service to IAH will complement QR's existing daily passenger service.

A combined ATL/IAH service will operate 2x weekly starting November 2; YYZ will operate 1x weekly starting November 7. All services will operate to Doha via Luxemburg with 777F equipment.

Best of luck to QR!

This is really fantastic news! Is there a timetable for the ATL/IAH routing. I have flown QR several times in JCL and it was fantastic! I would love to see a pax service to ATL!

I haven't been able to find one but it is probably a safe bet that most ops will be in the wee hours of the night.

Given the close ties between QR and Cargolux, I wonder if the upcoming QR frequencies from IAH/ATL to LUX will replace some of the existing Cargolux frequencies. For example, CV currently flies ATL-LUX 5x weekly.

I've been contracted to them for some time, and one look around LUX would negate your comment fairly quickly. Aside from that, the 777 isn't nearly as capable as the 744F on dense cargo, no matter how you cut it.

Hard to say what impact that will have on Cargolux. Yes, it could mean reduced CV frequencies to these airports (though CV doesn't serve YYZ), but it also might mean that the 777LRF is a better fit for current demand. CargoItalia made a big splash of launching ATL last year but couldn't make it work.

But I think the timing of this press release might have more to do with Lufthansa Cargo than with CV. Of these three destinations, two are served by LH Cargo by now-threatened night ops from Frankfurt. If LH isn't able to run these frequencies anymore, then QR might want to pick up that demand.

Rather the opposite. Cargolux will take advantage of QR's expansive destinations to more than 110 cities around the world, and it can add to QR's places where it does not serve expansively like North America.

What market is QR looking to serve with YYZ? Is there a significant amount of cargo movements to/from the Middle East via air?

I think it's actually good synergies. QR flights between DOH and LUX can feed CV flights to North and South America, and QR gets to benefit from CV's extensive RFS network.

No flight to the new "Cargo City" in St. Louis? Man, QR is missing the boat on this one. Why fly to Atlanta when you can fly to St. Louis and truck cargo to Atlanta?

I think that's more than a little dramatic.

that is certainly a risk, but still, LH is on par here with QR as it does not matter whether freight is trucked to LUX or CGN (should LH move partially there)
