Aer Lingus Seeks JV Without Alliance

Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:34 pm

As the title states, Aer Lingus is seriously considering becoming part of a North Atlantic joint venture WITHOUT joining an existing alliance. Would any alliance allow this? It seems like a rather unique experiment. Maybe VS will want to do the same?

Hmm.. With what carriers?
I mean all the majors are aligned to alliances... Then the unaligned carriers don't serve transatlantic markets... How would this work?

There's no issue having a JV with an unaligned carrier for an alliance member. DL already has one with DJ, for example.

But that is because DL has no alliance partner flying trans-pacific to and from Australia. What use would a JV with EI be for DL when they have one with AF that accomplishes the same thing (and the other airlines part of that venture)? AF certainly wouldn't be too happy about it. Same with UA/LH and AA/BA.
