EK To Send 5 A380s Daily To LHR, Rumor

Fri Oct 14, 2011 11:07 am

Recently there is a strong rumors here in Dubai that EK will make all 5 daily flights to LHR an A380 ride early next year. BAA approved two additional flights ( in addition to the current 2 daily) which will bring it to 4 A380 flights a day to LHR, according to the rumor.
If all of this was true, how can Emirates fill 2445 seats every day.

They probably can -- though I'd expect to see them bringing A380s to a few more cities before piling capacity to LHR. There are plenty of frames coming to bring LHR up to 5 A380s.

Are Emirates worried about not being able to fly the A380's to India. Did their business plan call for this.

I probably agree with you.

Furthermore, how the 5 A380s will be filled when EY & QR will send their A380s

How will the cargo loads hold out if this should happen?

Are we going to see a freighter flight into the UK each day to assist with any shortfall on cargo capacity due to A380 PAX flights?

Before they upgraded MAN to 3 x daily there were Rumours they'd use the third slot for a cargo flight. Obviously not, but wonder if this would be on the cards now?

Interesting question. Maybe they will send a freighter or the cargo isn't as much as expected so that the PAX business makes more money.

Maybe, as SIA are doing with their new A380s, there will be larger First/Business sections so the total number of seats actually available will not increase significantly.

Freight makes up a very attractive part of the budget figures for EK. I wonder if the flights from BHX/NCL and LGW ever take up any overspill from the LHR flights?

When you consider the uplift available on an A380 (bearing in mind the increased PAX figures you would loose between
1-2 ULD's worth of space for baggage) if a freighter might not be the answer to the problem.

When you consider how the "waves" are timed from DXB their flights are very attractive to Agents such as myself for quick connections onwards to the Far East and Oceania.

Yeah, I can imagine. I was wondering when I heard that as the 380 takes less freight. Maybe the market at LHR has so many competitors that the rates have dropped and they don't make that much money anymore.

EK does have 747-8 freighters coming.

I always joked that the reason EK originally ordered the A380-800F was to carry all the shopping back from LON that would not fit in the hold of the passenger A380s.

Makes perfect sense actually. A380 was built exactly for airports like LHR (ultra busy, slot limited). If BA can fly 8-9 744's between LHR and JFK, EK can definitely fly: LHR-DXB (on O/D alone - plenty of Brits in UAE alone + region), LHR-DXB-Asia/Pacific/Oceania, LHR-DXB-India/Pakistan. Yes = 4-5 x daily A380's makes complete sense. I wonder if we're ever going to see A380 on LGW-DXB as well (3 daily there).

To answer the original posters question, you will be amazed how filled up LHR flights are whether they wer 777's or A380's. During the summer season it self, the premuim cabins are even more filled some times than the economy cabin. If emirates decide to send the A380 on all of its flights to LHR, I wouldn't be surprised.

Actually it could be 2,585 seats per day depending on which version EK send. AFAIK A6-EDF upto A6-EDM have 517 seats.

London to India/Pakistan - one stop in Dubai...... that is why they want the 388's flying there 5 x daily... UK to Sub-Continent is massive market for EK.

^ dont discount Kangaroo route competition.

MEL and SYD dont get 3x daily flights on EK for no reason at all (regardless if some go via S.E. Asian ports en route).

But wouldn't it make more sense to wait until they get more flying rights into India before attracting more UK-India passengers via Dubai? From what I understood their flights are already packed...

At the moment I could imagine that there is a lot of vying for seats on the A380 services to LHR. I think of that every time I see the EK A380 over London.

I mean if you had brought a premium ticket wouldn't you want access to the spa at the front and the bar at the back? I would and I would be very browned off to fly in any other aircraft on the route that didn't have that, especially if it didn't cost more.

I haven't looked but I doubt EK charge a premium to fly the A380 so you get the passengers themselves booking themselves on it.

That's the aircraft's special talent, to suck passengers away from other aircraft. An airline has to fill those seats.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Why the focus on India and regional flights and EK? Last I looked EK is doing a decent expansion to Africa. Since LHR is a impacted and slot controlled hub, flights to new (emerging) destinations will be slow. Since EK also has Chinese feed for flights to Africa, These will quickly become profitable routes.

My question is where is EK's next great expansion. I keep hearing rumors of an expanded Russian bilateral, but only rumors and no evidence.

For those who want to know more about EK's operations:
A380 Production Thread #10 (by someone83 Aug 3 2011 in Civil Aviation)

EK has four departure banks
2am to 4am, 1 flight to LHR
7am to 11am, 2 flights to LHR
2pm to 5pm: 2 flights to LHR
9pm to 12am: none (small regional departure bank)

Arrival banks
4am to 7am: 2 arrivals + 1 at 8:45am from LHR
11am to 2pm: none (regional with Asian arrival bank)
3pm to 9pm: 1 arrival
10pm to 1am: 1 arrival from LHR

From the above we can see that three flights are feeding one arrival bank at DXB. Since Flight #8, arriving at 19:35, feeds a small regional departure bank, it would be my last guess to upgauge to an A388. The other four EK flights from LHR seem like obvious future A380 flights.

India needs UAE help, in particular Dubai, for exports from their chemical industry and pharmaceuticals. So there is a chance.

I want to know if Dubai is expanding their Chinese or Russian bilaterals. IMHO, there is tremendous room for growth there for EK and FlyDubai.

I'd imagine EK029 would be the last to be 'upgraded' to the A380. It doesn't connect that well with the major departure 'banks' at DXB and is probably the least convenient flight time for those travelling O/D to DXB. As it is, EK29/30 is currently operated by the smallest aircraft of the five flights, in terms of seats.

Only because it has the best premium product of the three 777s. The planes are exactly the same size, but with the 773's there's a chance that you're getting a recliner in J, an old ICE system and a generally more worn out plane. To me that indicates that this flight attracts premium paying pax (for whatever reason) and hence could benefit from the significantly better J/F products in the A380.

In EK's case at Heathrow (heavily slot restricted), the A380 is doing exactly what it was designed to do - offering more seats without adding additional flights.

Try getting the same capacity as 5 x A380's in 5 flights operated by any other type of aircraft.........

It can be hit and miss either way. In May I flew on A6-EMM, a 773, but this had been refitted seats in J similar to those found on more recent additions to the fleet. In contrast in July I flew on A6-EBJ, a 77W but with old-style recliners. Admittedly those were flights to HAM and not LHR or LGW, so I do not know if EK attempts to achieve more consistent type use into either. But the refit programme is continuing...

@Spa: Its a typical been-there-done-that product. I showered once and its fun to have said "I was naked at 40k feet", the second time I showered just for the sake of it (what an ecological waste) and thats about it. Nevertheless, the spacious bathroom is cool, if you feel like doing a cartwheel.
@Bar: Its cool if you are bored and want to socialise. You dont care less, if you want to sleep or have privacy, which I imagine is more important for most of the premium customers. And thats good, there really is not enough room, if every second premium passenger wanted to hang around the bar
Quoting Quokka (Reply 35):

They dont distinguish Business/Economy product as they do with Suites and normal Firstclass. Thus, during the seat upgrade process, you can encounter both on the same route. All 773 already had new seats since a year or so, and all but a handful 77W have new seats. However, on the website, you can check your "equipment" for that day beforehand, if you want to avoid recliners.
And yes, all three-class non-suite 77W have the exact same capacity as the 773, albeit slight layout changes (like lav position).

Well, if I at least very much enjoyed it, Nature would have at least done me a nice favour. But "just for the sake of it" is like killing lots of cows but leave the steaks to rot in the dump.

Back to topic: Does anybody know, if EK is considering to get more slots at LHR (or even LGW) instead of using more A380s ? Didnt they at some point have 10 daily flights to London? (Or am I mixing it up with 10 flights to UK at some point or something...)

I can't see EK obtaining any more slots at LHR in the future. I think you might be mixing it up with the number of flights they used to operate into the UK. I think they are upto 13/14 per day now (I am not at work at present so do not have the timetables to hand).

I do think the future at LHR is A380 territory (they have to put these beasts somewhere).

Roll on BHX getting at least one per day.

MAN is 2X A388 daily?!? I missed that.

I would never have bet that MAN would see as many A388s from EK as LHR...
