Could Norwegian (DY) Ever Open A Base At LGW?

Sat Oct 15, 2011 1:53 pm

I was thinking that could DY ever open up it's first non Scandinavian hub at maybe LGW...? At the moment LGW is DY largest operation outside Scandinavia, so do you think this could happen in the near future?

I'm not so sure it would work.
They have just announced that they will cease AAL-LGW from the 30th October.
Not sure how the other routes are doing.

Didn't they start AAL just this year? I thought maybe they will stop it for the winter and restart again next year, just guessing though so im not sure. I think DY are doing quite well on the other routes.

Well, they actually did start a hub in WAW a few years ago, I believe it did not turn out too well, since it was closed in 2010 If I remember correctly.

Oh right, well we'll have to see how DY get on over the next couple years and take it from there. Thanks anyway.

I agree, I don't think easyJet would sit back and let them expand, the only LCC that would pose serious competition for easyJet is perhaps Ryanair.

I think it would be a severe mistake by a scandinavian company to ever try to set up a hub in the UK   They would face severe obstacles in the british market in a number of ways. Not being local is pretty difficult in the UK not only for an airline   And they would also get an enormous competition from local airlines. I think Norwegian should do what they do best, namely serve the scandinavian market with high quality low cost flights that SAS in unable to provide.

Well Ryanair have done well here and they aren't exactly local. They are an Irish airline.

If there is any country where there are obstacles for not being local, it is France and Easyjet are doing well there.... Probably because there isn't any viable French LCC in existence.

Indeed! LGW is a major focus city for DY. When they established themselves at HEL they also started operations between HEL and LGW. So since Finland is outside Scandinavia, they have ops from LGW to places outside Scandinavia. At least from the Nordic countries I am sure LGW will enjoy an increase in DY presence over the next couple of years.

I have not heard any news about DY hiring local pilots or F/A for their LGW operations. That would make operations to smaller destinations (here DY currently do not have a base) in the Nordic countries more effective. I can definitely see DY placing some of their planes more permanently at LGW and hiring UK F/A and pilots for their already large operation at LGW.

As others have noted in this thread, they will probably stay out of Easyjet and Ryanair core business for as long as they can. At RYG DY silently canceled routes that was announced by Ryanair so they would not start direct competition.

Next year Ryanair has announced that they will start flying domestic routes in Sweden. And they have said that they would love to fly domestic in Norway if the Norwegian government could ease up on their taxes... (Not going to happen).

What will this force DY to consider? They have been expanding at a rate above 25% the last year. They have many more airplanes on order with Boeing. 2012 will be an interesting year here in Scandinavia.

From what I hear, Malaga and Las Palmas are next in line for a new DY base.

They are very interesting points because it shows even as aviation enthusiasts we don't know what they are doing. What are they doing?

Norweigian just isn't on the map in the UK. They have never invested in advertising and no one knows they are here.

A base here for DY would be a waste of time and money. Also the UK market has a way of excluding foreign airlines.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Well, FR has managed to capture the market quite well....

It could even happen to be that the UK citizens just have money for the bare necessities these days? If you study the newly released provisional numbers from UK CAA for August 2011, you can clearly see that the passenger numbers are growing above average where Scandinavian carriers are flying and the passenger numbers are growing below average or even falling between airports where primarily easyJet and Ryanair are flying. Even at airports where British Airways are flying, the growth is below average.

Totally agree, which makes DY even considering putting a base here totally unnecessary. EZY are finding it hard these days, their fares are not exactly cheap. For an airline to attempt to get a foothold in a foreign market you have to advertise. There is no room for invisible players.
