AA 191 Memorial Finally

Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:10 pm

Seems they finally built a memorial for this and it was unveiled today, might head out there tommorow.
By the way, anyone who is familiar with the area, does anyone know where exactly the point of impact was when DC10 hit the ground

Simple, yet tasteful! Very nice to see a memorial finally set up for this tragedy!

The wall fits in nicely with the landscaping. It seems to bring a feeling of peace to that area.

The crash site was about 1 mile past the end of 32R at the old Ravenswood Airport which had long been closed due to proximity to ORD.

It is immediately north of the Chicago Police Canine Training Facility which was operational at the time. The aircraft came within about 1/2 mile of the Amoco Oil tank farm just to the west and less than 1/2 mile short of the Northwest Tollway (I-90).

On that sad day, the air was fairly clear and the smoke plume could be seen from far away. We could see it from our building in downtown Chicago.

This link displays a satellite photo with labels, and you can zoom out to see the surrounding area.

I am in the Admirals Club at ORD right now and read this with a haunting memory of that day. May all the pax and crew rest in peace and it is fitting that a memorial has finally been built.

Let us learn from their sacrifces. Fly safe, cut no corners.

So, the location of the memorial is about 2 miles east of the crash site?
