What Is DL Doing At HHN?

Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:51 am

Hi All

I've been at HHN the last two weekends, and each Saturday I've seen a DL 764 depart around 0900 or so. Any ideas on what its been doing here?

Also got to see the CV 748 doing circuits the other day

Cheers,

DoD charter maybe?
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

I'd presume a military charter flight?

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the military? I think they all fly in somewhere for training or something army related, but honestly I'm not entirely sure!

That would explain the occasional C-17's that I've seen here as well then. First time I saw it I thought it may have been a diversion, but when I saw it yesterday as well it was obvious they were regular visitors.

They continue to "points beyond." HHN is just a tech stop for fuel, catering and a crew change.

Wouldnt that make more sense at AMS since NW often used that for military charters, or Rammstein since its a huge US airforce base not that far away?

HHN has cheaper landing charges than AMS, and cheaper fuel than RMS.

There's also the security issue of having civilian crews hanging around an airbase...

I live under the approach path for Ramstein, so I'm quite happy to see these flights go to HHN instead.
Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar

Looks like there are two more enroute, though they won't arrive until after nightfall:

HHN is used because its an approved tech stop location. RMS is only used if there are pax getting on/off. There are plenty of civilian crews that operate into and out of RMS on a daily basis, just have a look at the database on here and you can see the pictures.

That is most certainly a non issue. Civil crews flying airliners are trusted, and they know better than just hanging around. I think you underestimate the ability of civilian crews. And for the security issue most such crews are performing better than many military personell

DL 763s, not 764s.

The 764s are all outfitted with the new lie flat business class and are busy doing the premium LHR/FRA/MUC and GRU (and possibly a few other) flights. They would probably not use them for military charters.

Later this month and next month you'll be seeing 744's passing through HHN as well.

I have see Delta, United, Continental, American 767s and 777s in HHN, together with many other charter airlines, almost every time I was up there, and seen young men all dressed in green/brown deboarding and boarding. To my knowledge they are not going to some training, but to war.

I assume, HHN just is cheaper.

Besides pricing, HHN is also less crowded than the major commercial airports and was a US Air Force Base for more than 40 years. Indeed, HHN still hosts a small communications base.

Another thing is that you are less likely to see major protests like the ones seen at SNN and other places over the years, because of how isolated HHN is.

Yes, HHN is one of the few places in Europe where planes still are welcome to the general public, because it is the only job machine out there and people still remember the noise of the air base...

Thanks for the clarification! I've always seen them from an angle, so was never sure if it was a 763 or 764.
