OAG Changes 10/17/2011: FL/WN Only

Mon Oct 17, 2011 7:19 pm

WN filed a schedule extension last week. For schedule extensions to be useful to look at they have to be comparisons versus a prior period. Only a few carriers file their schedules that way, so I need to use a different method to review their schedules. In this case, I am showing FEB/MAR/APR 2012 vs. 2011. As usual the average number of departures per day for the month is shown. Fractions indicate non-daily operation or mid-month schedule changes.

Not surprised, as WN also flies IND-LAS.

I wonder if this will motivate G4 to resume FWA-LAS? One of the biggest reasons they left the route in the first place was price pressure from a 3-way IND-LAS fare war between DL,FL, and WN. Now the trio is down to one (and even WN has cut capacity).

Looks like PHX will lose around 9 to 10 departures between March and April.
Tiny, unreadable text leaves ample room for interpretation.

These are year over year changes, so I would not call it a seasonal cut. Looks like long-haul Vegas has been trimmed.

Didn't WN stop doing their frequency comparison? I haven't seen it in a while.

WN is ending SJC-RNO? That leaves no carriers in that market. (RW did it with a DC9 many years ago).

I'd like to see AS/QX come in with SJC-RNO, SJC-SNA and SJC-SAN to give some competition on those routes and continue to build up AS's new unofficial SJC focus station.

Many of them, not all of them as you have shown, are being replaced by WN metal.

Example, FL axing STL-MCO in favor of WN adding an extra STL-MCO to make it 5 daily still.

Otherwise yes most of everything here is what was pasted in the link I created awhile back.

Another round of schedule extensions will be coming out November 14th which will cover the entire summer schedule.

Many of these are seasonal changes too, like STL-SAN, this will be coming back.

From what I'm hearing depending on the November 7 pilot vote if it passes the next schedule update and release on November 14 for summer flying will have biggest schedule change ever for WN and FL. Enjoy wnfg
my post are my opinion only and not those of southwest airlines and or airtran airlines.

Seems like that would be awfully short notice to get the correct schedule developed based on the results of the vote, unless you think they'll prepare two different schedules.

Not totally...the big difference is that Easter happens much earlier in 2012 vs. 2011. The airlines always trim down the seasonal Florida stuff right after Easter. However, last year Easter was on April 24th meaning the airlines kept the seasonal Florida stuff through almost the entire month. In 2012, it's on the 8th of April...so the airlines cut back sooner.

These OAG posts are interesting and I appreciate you posting them, but you have to be careful when you analyze them out of context.

It's pretty easy to create two schedules.

These are real reductions in flying. You are saying that the reason is that Easter is earlier and that may be true, but it is still a reduction and there is no offsetting increase in FEB or MAR so regardless it is a lot fewer seats than last year. I don't think that is out of context.

? I show both the changes of WN and FL.

Oddly, the blog mentioned that if a route lost FL flying, it would be replaced by WN Metal, like the example I copied here, MCO-STL loses FL, so WN adds another flight.

MKE-BWI is another route that switches from one airline to another which your OAG does not show yet. It must not be filed.

'll have to look around if I can

With RSW , we get seasonal flying starting around late January to early February. Like said above, April is when they chop everything back down.

MKE-BWI actually already had WN operating thrice daily in addition to FL's twice daily so in this case it's just FL dropping service with no corresponding increase.

PHX does seem to be shrinking quite a bit. Though it is noteworthy to see EWR at 2X out of there, which is very curious considering that is one of the EWR routes that already has two carriers on it (US and CO/UA)

Poor ISP. WN moved in, built it up, and now is shrinking.

You can thank B6 @ JFK for that.

Goes way beyond that. They'd be fools not to take advantage of the LGA slots they got from TZ's bankruptcy. Besides, where is the typical New Yorker going to want to fly from, ISP or LGA?

These are real reductions in flying. You are saying that the reason is that Easter is earlier and that may be true, but it is still a reduction and there is no offsetting increase in FEB or MAR so regardless it is a lot fewer seats than last year.

I don't debate that it is fewer seats, however I debate your logic that WN is "gutting Florida" when all they did was reduce capacity in one month because of a shift in the holiday. If they were truly "gutting Florida", they would have correspondingly cut March as well, but they did not.

FL dropping of MKE-BWI is shown above. There is just no increase on WN.

Yes, but this is a year over year comparison.

Yes and no. As we know, with each further month the integration of strategy moves further along. Why was ACY dropped in JAN and not NOV? APR's combined schedule was more evolved than MAR. The Summer schedule will be even more so.

Hopefully WN adds ISP-ATL flights to make up for the shrinking of ISP. I would certainly use WN for my ATL business and connections beyond ATL.

Except there are many saying (on other threads about ATL and WN) that ATL will NOT be a connecting hub for WN but more of an O&D station. IF that's the case, I don't know if ISP would see service to Hartsfield at all.

Not sure, though ACY was a subsidy market, so that may have been a driving factor.

Based on what? The only thing I noticed was the seasonal cuts driven mostly the shift in Easter.

My point is that with each schedule change they are slowly moving toward whatever the ultimate vision is. For example, we know they want to shrink ATL. They could have done that already. That have not. Why? I'd say that they are moving in measured steps toward their final plan and that it may take 2 years to get there. So, I'm saying that I consider each month's schedule change more indicative of their real plans than the last one.

I would think there would be enough O&D between Long Island and ATL to support at least one flight.

It may be coming.
