From Day 1- How Long To Build A 787?

Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:30 pm

I was wondering, just how long dog does it take to build, (piece together), a 787. Also how many can Boeing deliver in a month?

Well, thus far into the program, it takes about FIVE YEARS to get on started and certificated.

And, given two deliveries since the original target date of May, 2008, that's 0.049 aircraft per month.

But to (unsarcastically) answer your real question, their goal is to have a three-day assembly time, once the pieces arrive in Seattle/North Carolina. Preceding that, the suppliers all make their own roadmaps (and thus far, fail miserably at it).

Right now the production rate is two per month, trending towards two point five.

They can snap one together pretty quickly, but complete outfitting takes some time.

The reason I asked is that Boeing has 800+ orders. So at 2 per month, they will be building this thing for 50 years!!!! WTF. If I, as an airline committed to the 787 in 2000, lets say, and I'm at the end of the list, do I get the original aircraft, or is all the stuff that's upgraded in the coming years included? Or do I pay more? I bought a 65 Ford Mustang, for example, and it wasn't delivered until 1972, do I get the 72 model or a 65 remake??????

Boeing is increasing the production rate. There will be two lines at Everett and one at Charleston. Once all three lines are at full capacity in the next few years, it's possible Boeing could be producing almost 20 787s a month.

Back in the day we ordered cars from the factory....never from a lot....I want my 787.

Yet Boeing has stated 787s produced there will be more expensive.

I am not sure either of these statements are based on facts. Can you substantiate them? I would love to see them.

Boeing has stated they opened the plant in SC to ensure they can continue deliver planes to their customers. That is why they have a battle at the NLRB.

Also, Stitch in the reply above answered your question. Your being a little dramatic....

Increase production rate. Target is something like 10/month according to internet speculation.
