Widebody Tri-jet Pax Status DC-10 / L-1011

Tue Oct 18, 2011 3:16 am

So looking at wikipedia just now it looks like Biman still has a few DC-10s in service and by the looks of it the L-1011 is done except for per wiki...

A total of eight Lockheed L-1011s were in commercial service in December 2010 with operators Privilege-Rollins Air (2), Air Charter Express (two), Elite Aviation (one), Las Vegas Sands Corp (one), Sky Capital (one), and SAM Intercontinental (one).

I miss the widebody trijets; they were sweet! What routes does Biman fly these on?

Well, Rollins and Elite seem to be one operation, Air Charter Express is history and the L1011 stored in NBO (as far as I know). SAM-I's -250 is in Pakistan with Askari Aviation
Aircraft are marginal costs with wings.

Are there any DC-10s or L-1011s in a museum right now? Or, for that matter, are there any plans to preserve one in a museum?

At least I still get to see the MD-10Fs of FedEx every day at PHX. There's something majestic about a tri-jet on finals that can never be matched by the twins.

Euro atlantic airlines have L1011.
Not sure what its doing with it.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results

Manchester has a nose of a Monarch DC-10, and the Kansas City Airline History Museum has an L-1011. The Tehran Museum/boneyard has two L-1011s while they never were in service in Iran.
But it's about time that Le Bourget, Datan Shang, Lelystad, Seattle or Pima picks up a DC-10 or L-1011.

Doesn't the RAF still fly some L1011s as refueling tankers?

They've used them on a seasonal basis between HNL and LAS as well doing charters for Boyd Vacations. I think they're using the 767s and may start putting the 777s on that route instead of the DC-10s. I believe OAI is slowly retiring the type.

Las Vegas Sands Corp (one)

That's not really a passenger a/c in the traditional sense, as it has been a VIP/private a/c for many years, and flights on it are not available to the general public.

Omni has been scrapping theirs, N270AX and N720AX are currently in process of scrapping at TUL. One is pretty much stripped and sitting on wood, the other has titles painted over and engines removed. It's a sad sight.

Speaking of widebody trijets, I just flew on two MD-11s, which are an endangered species. I had to go to Montreal to fly to AMS to connect to LHR. And I live near RIC. I'd also go out of my way to fly on a DC-10 or L-1011 again. But the MD-11 is the next best thing.
