Kuwait's Sailboat Inspired New Airport KIA

Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:20 am

A friend emailed me about the new Kuwait International Airport.

Beautiful contemporary architecture project with hints of traditional islamic style. The buildings look airy with a lot of light. A nice layout in the Kuwaiti desert. It will be interesting to see from up in the air.

If anyone knows more about this project... when they are planning to open this new airport? I will be happy to visit after it is completed. I always loved flying into brand new international airports.

See the pictures.

This is a planned new terminal at the south end of KWI. It's designed by Foster.
They're supposed to start next year, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Norman Foster - a great architect by all means.
I hope they will build this new terminal. A true class act!

Madame you're acting like its under construction and ready to go in a year LOL, it has a 1970s feel from inside, but atleast its not typically airport like.

Quite a beautiful rendering I must say - the thing I find with new airports is that they are all too stark, clinical and cold ... it's nice to see some arabian architecture being fused with modern design in a tasteful manner.

Now the big question is .... Will it be A380 ready?!

Certainly well overdue, as Kuwait is absolutely jammed during the 10pm-2am timeframe, with flights to the Indian Subcontinent, GCC and European flights all departing during this time.

But the project itself certainly looks very ambitious, as they will be literally starting from scratch with this new facility versus trying to expand the current terminal. It looks like it can be done in phases, with the more southern of the two buildings being constructed first, and the second as traffic warrants.

I think the feel is more contemporary than the 70s but it is very reminiscent of Saarinen's TWA terminal at JFK and also IAD.

FINALLY an airport design with great architecture! Not the usual steal, glass and stone ...

Stunning and beautiful choice of matierals, room, airy construction and the perfect mix of colors!

LOVE IT!

I love it too!!

Would have made a perfect inaugural with two Concordes landing there.
One British Airways and one Air France.
Concorde fits the airport's architectural lines perfectly well.

Agree 100%. It's a very clean, functional look. Don't know about room for expansion, however.

Yes, and I think it's a style that is timeless, it always looks good.

The cantiliever roof also reminds me of PanAm's JFK terminal, as well as Berlin Templehof.

To me it just looks like half of the terminal he designed at PEK.

I agree, it feels very 1970's -- but I suppose the concrete construction and large overhangs may help to keep cooling costs down.

From the aerial view, (maybe it's just me) it looks like a Polycom desktop conference call station. Those who use this thing know what I'm talking about.

Knowing how things work in Kuwait, I would not bet on a timeline of next year by which this thing will be up and running, by next year it will probably still being argued over in government circles.

Judging from the pictures KU is going to have some. Oh well every airport sketch these days has A380 imprint.
But seriously, building a new international airport these days without considering A380-readiness is just plain foolish, so I think this question answers itself easily.

I like the design. Judging from those pictures, it seeme like the ceiling is incredibly high and the whole building is massively hughe! Don't know if that would be a good way to go, after all it's just costs costs costs. Nevertheless, beatiful design, good mixture of Orient and Oxident.

Are you ok? i was adressing her, and did you not read the part where she is excited enough about it to seem like its already being built and be useable in a couple of years time, also I post an LOL at the end of my comment do you know what it stands for?

As for my 1970s comment I did not mean it in a bad sense, its just that such architecture started making its way into the Gulf back then, atleast interior wise.

The interiors might be similar but it takes into considaration the hot weather in the area and high ceilings is a way to make terminals cooler.

It's a pretty nice looking airport, though perhaps a bit understated by Middle Eastern standards. It would probably be better if they stopped referring to it as KIA.

Agreed, but nor did I say anything to upset Madame or you that you commented, so as I mentioned the French term in the post that got removed.

Why? is it because of confusion with IKA or the Korean auto company?

First, a very interesting airport. I like the planned layout; even if it looks like a speakerphone.

Agreed. KIA is another airport. The IATA code is KWI. When I read this thread, I started searching for the KIA airport and was surprised to be directed to: Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). Another in New Guinea... Amusing and not a big deal...

They reused the Beijing T3 masterplan for this terminal, which itself was evolved from Hong Kong. The trees have been changed from steel to what looks like concrete. The trick here might be how to let enough light in without heating the inside too much.

I was going to say roughly the same in how the basic shape looked very similar to that of PEK T3. Nice to see such a supposedly innovative architect as Norman Foster being so innovative here as well.

Nice design give a feeling of the Pan Am jet age era, really hope seeing it put into construction soon. KWI already started construction of the new Cargo tarmac which is considered the largest in the region and should be fully functional by APRIL 2011.

KWI already can handle the A380 now, they have extended RWY 33L and prepared gate 25 to accommodate the A380 months ago.
