DL Going To Start JFK To PVG,PEK Or HKG?

Tue Oct 18, 2011 1:21 pm

Currently, the only Asia route that DL has from their JFK hub is JFK-NRT. DL is the second largest carrier in the NYC area behind UA/CO who has EWR- NRT,PEK, PVG and HKG. When DL is finished with their T4 expansion do you see them adding these Asian routes?

Unlikely that will happen since Delta flies to all those cities nonstop from Detroit. Does Delta have enough 777 to do any JFK to China flights ? Their 777 fleet is limited to 18 airplanes that already fly to all corners of the world, Johannesberg, Dubai, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and Peking.

Delta has less 777 then AA and UA, AA has 47 with 6 77W's coming & UA has about 50 plus the Continental 777 which are about 16 planes. Delta needs to order some 777 TODAY.

No. Unless DL can replicate the connecting traffic like UA has at EWR. Until then, DTW will be the primary Asian gateway.

Yup. That's going to be one hell of a 777 fleet when intergrated.

Yes it is; with the oldest frames approaching 20 years. I'm much more excited to see the 787 and A350 come into the fleet.

If they launched JFK HKG with a B 777, they would be eaten up alive by CX. It would probably be more profitable if DL flew a B77L JFK-PEK nonstop.

In addition they serve those cities from NRT, giving them two connecting options. Agree, not likely for a non-stop in the foreseeable future!
Good goes around!

There is the SkyTeam alliance as well, and DL can feed Korean Air for ICN service, and China Eastern Airlines that can provide service to PVG, plus China Airlines to both KIX and TPE that can cover Asia pretty well out of JFK, so DL doesn't need to necessarily provide their own metal for that service. That, combined with the fact that their DTW hub provides better connections for a better majority of their route structure in the US, and I think it is doubtful DL will add much Asian service from JFK. DOT is also not going to give them any more frequencies when other carriers who don't have as much service in Asia would like to grow (AA is the noteable one, but US could start some service when the A350s come online)
