Ryanair To Open A Base At Warsaw Modlin Airport

Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:58 pm

Ryanair's Michael Cowley has held a press conference in Warsaw today announcing airlines' interest in opening a base at Warsaw Modlin airport which is due to start operations in 2012. According to Cowley, Ryanair plan over the next 5 years is to have up to 10 aircraft based in Modlin operating to 40 destinations in Europe. Now, because the airline has not signed the contract with the airport yet (it was mentioned that the negotiations are ongoing and in it's final stages), and no airport representative was present at the press conference, how much can we read into it? Is it just a PR stunt to put pressure on the airport authorities? Anyone has more?
Link to the news from the polish aviation website - in polish only, sorry.

Interesting.
Ryanair will obviously try and get a very favourable deal on their own terms so i would not be surprised if this deal does not happen. I suppose it depends on how much interest other airlines show.

Here is the airport website, it's a former military facility but it needs a lot of work to bring it up to standard.

Here's a selection of most recent photos of the terminal building.

Looks pretty raw, would you say 8 months is enough time to finish it, test etc. Planned opening is for June 2012.

Unsurprising, of course.

I wonder whether W6 would shift from WAW. I suppose they would, if they could obtain lower landing, passenger, and parking fees, which seems rather likely.

The new airport is just 35km from Warschau ( if that is your destination, which often isnt the case) so I would say to W6 : MOVE if it lowers fares. ( And start a Warschau - Budapest route ofcourse   )

Interesting piece of information is available on the airport website, such as landing fees in a PDF file (polish only)
http://www.modlinairport.pl/images/u...Regulamin%20Oplat%2001.02.2011.pdf
According to this document, any aicraft with a MTOW over 2T will be charged at 28PLN/T (£5.60). B737-800, according to wikipedia has a MTOW of 65.5-85.1T. So taking MTOW from the middle of that range gives 75T x 28PLN = 2100PLN (£422).
Parking fees - 30PLN (£6.03) for the first 24h, 25PLN any subsequent 24h started. Monthly parking fee 460PLN (£92)
Anyone knows how it compares to landing charges at WAW.

Not good news for Wizzair, they are one of the few LCC in Europe that have not had to compete head to head with Ryanair, all but on a fraction of their routes...

Despite Wizzair being a Hungarian carrier, Poland is by far their biggest market and Warsaw is their largest base. If Ryanair does base ten aircraft here, this is going to have a massive impact on the airline and dwarf their presence.

Wizzair has in recent years been in dispute with WAW about the price of their fees and were not happy with the closure of the LCC Terminal they use to utilise. I would suspect they would be keen to use this new airport too, as they usually use secondary airports across their network. BUT with Ryanair opening up at this airport, I'm not sure Wizzair will want to be seen flying head to head with them.

Polish web-service pasazer.com had an interview with the PR person from the new Modlin Airport at the recent Routes conference in Berlin. He said that the airport is talking with many airlines and quite a few of them were not present in Warsaw up to this point. Never mention FR but did say they are shooting for June 2012 right before the Euro Soccer Cup.

My first thought is that the terminal looks a bit small for ten based aircraft and up to 2000 passengers an hour. Presumably they have a plan to expand, perhaps it's a modular building.
