DL 737-900ER Seats And Avod?

Thu Oct 20, 2011 12:17 am

I was at the ATL Delta Heritage Museum today and in hanger 2 there was a mockup of BE Aerospace coach seats with integrated monitors and super slim design. I asked the people milling around about them and they said they were possible seats for the 737-900ERs that were on order. The TV's looked pretty big and the seats had headrests. I wish I would have snapped a photo. Anyone know anything about these and if they're really destined to have AVOD on the 900ER?

I don't know about AVOD. That seems mostly used on their longer haul fleet, so my guess is that the new 737s will have satellite TV instead. I bet they'll have wifi to, so it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

I think these seats are 747 and A330 bound as well?

The domestic aircraft with PTVs have both satellite TV and AVOD, although for the AVOD there is a fee (except on flights to Hawaii and Puerto Rico).

Just the A330s, not the 747s. 747s are getting Weber 5751s with those same monitors.

At this point it's pure speculation but it would make sense. Heck, we don't even know what the F/Y seat count will be although i'd venture that it will be very close to Continental's as they have slimline seats installed in Y. Personally, I think they will all come with PTVs pre-installed.

I can't imagine they would not have the PTVs. These birds have decent range so i can't even imagine they wouldn't be in there. I think we will see quite a few transcons operated by these in the future so PTVs seem necessary as these will replace alot of aircraft retiring since they still wont get even the first deliveries for along time still.

I thought Delta said 180 seats tentatively for these planes. I think continental has 173

The seats I have seen on DL and CO are not what I would consider slim-line. LH's new seats- now those ARE slimline.

I would imagine PTV, probably satellite based and WiFi from day one. Should be nice aircraft to fly on.
Next flights: MAN-ORK-LHR(EI)-MAN(BD); MAN-LHR(BD)-ORK (EI); DUB-ZRH-LAX (LX) LAX-YYZ (AC) YYZ-YHZ-LHR(AC)-DUB(BD)

If Delta does install PTVs on these birds, it's going to be a real shame that United and Delta will have almost fleetwide PTVS (or on course for that)....Meanwhile, American is going to get 400+ 737s/A320s delivered with no PTVs....

Is DL going to order the 739ER with extra fuel tanks? (the type that CO didn't bother to get)

When is delta getting its first 737-900ER? How many will they receive per year?

First delivery in 2013.

12 in 2013
19 in 2014
19 in 2015
19 in 2016
19 in 2017
12 in 2018

I would think so...by then the wireless PTV systems should be familiar enough that the 739's don't need to be wired seat-to-seat.

However we're still waiting for an MD90 to get PTV's and that's been delayed for well over a year now...and I'm starting to doubt that will ever happen.

I am always so curious as to what all these seats look like. Is there a website which shows all these different types of seats?

From B/E Aerospace's website:

BTW, they are the same seats that CO is using on their new 739ERs.

Just to note, Steve Gorman, EVP Ops was AGAINST putting PTVs in the 739, he thinks the industry norm will be handheld tablets (Ipad etc) but, it was decided that the 739 WILL have PTVs.

I don't think it's DL having second thoughts. The i9s are still not ready. The first 744 will enter service come November without them. Still don't have an answer as to what they delay in certification is.

Good lord. We're at least a year now on certification.

While we're on the topic of those seats.. which one is more comfortable the DL "leather" (is it real?) or the UA/CO cloth?

I've only flown on the DL leather.. and the seat cushioning was fine, but the cover itself was kinda wrinkly looking and stuck to my hand.

Yes, the DL leather is real leather, no matter how much anyone tries to convince you that it isn't. Looking in the seat pocket proves it.

CO has ordered and been receiving -924ERs. The order was placed a couple of years ago. When the -900 series was started (Alaska's order), CO ordered about 15 at that time. The external dimensions are the same between the two models (I think I read that the 737-900 could not be stretched without having to increase the landing gear for greater ground clearance.

It is my understanding that there is more than fuel tanks difference between regular -900s and -900ERs. When Lion ordered the -900ERs (launch customer), to meet the range and capacity requirements, Boeing redesigned the rear bulkhead (flattened it rather than the normal design used for decades). The extra fuel tanks and other changes were made. So it is not unreasonable that the early -900s seat less than the -900ERs. How each airline decides seating, there will be differences. Lion has single class (Y) wit 213 seats. CO seems to use 173 seats on both models.

The main reason the early -900s hold less than the -900ERs is that the-900ER has an additional pair of emergency exits aft of the wing, allowing up to 200 passengers in a single-class configuration. The -900 can only hold up to a maximum of 189 passengers.

I believe the -900ER uses the new flat rear pressure bulkhead introduced by Boeing a few years ago on the -800. That allowed a row or two of seating to be pushed further back in the rear because the galleys and/or lavatories could be moved from forward of the rear exit doors to the aft.

Maximum permitted seating on the -900ER is either 215 or 220 depending whether the additional exit doors are certified as Type 1 or Type 2 exits. If the exits are deactivated, the same 189 maximum capacity applies as on the original -900 (and same as the -800).

Thanks Dave. My understanding however was that CO did not take the extra tanks for their 900ERs, hence why they have difficulty making transcons during the winter, and mainline to hawaii year round (or just about.) I was wondering if DL was planning on getting the 900ERs with additional tanks that CO didn't order.

CO uses the 900s (non-ERs) on routes where they won't crap out on -- particularly EWR to Florida.
