Air Asia X Starts First LGW Flight Today

Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:43 am

So today (24th) LGW will have Air Asia arriving. I guess it will be the A340 coming, which is brilliant soon as no one else flies them here hardly. Does anyone know what time the flight arrives here and then departs?

It's great to get new airlines... next is LH on the 30th.

I wonder how well D7 is faring on the London-KUL route ?

It has cut the number of flights and its prices are not always competitive with MH and especially the Gulf carriers. I believe in November, D7 will be cutting LGW-KUL flight frequency to only three services a week rising to five flights a week in December.

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I was just curious since I've been away for awhile... Didn't Air Asia X used to fly STN-KUL? What happened to this route? Did they just switch it from STN to LGW? How long has the STN flight been gone if it is indeed gone?

I remember flying D7 STN-KUL-STN and paying £99 each way all-in.

Yes.

I believe they decided back in July to switch airports from STN to LGW.

They cited several reasons, the main ones were accessibility into London and the high air tax cost of flying into STN.

Airline chief executive Azran Osman-Rani was quoted as saying: “The high air tax negated the strategic advantage of Stansted. We can’t offer a £99 fare any more. We have seen an impact on passengers since late last year.”

He said: “We have seen the number of connecting passengers drop. We have probably lost 10% of our traffic.”

Osman-Rani added: “Gatwick has a bigger catchment area and it’s a better market for higher-fare flights. In a period of high costs you have to get higher yield [passengers]. You are seeing some of the low-cost carriers shifting aircraft to Gatwick [for the same reason].”

He said the decision to move was not easy, adding: “Stansted has been a fantastic partner.” But he insisted there was nothing Stansted could have done to change his mind. “It would not change the economics if the airport was free,” he said.

Osman-Rani also said Gatwick appeared a more popular choice among passengers. “We had a lot of feedback from passengers that they preferred Gatwick because of the access to central London,” he said.

There has been a significant price increase. Some of the cheapest one-way fares in November start at £333 (including tax and fuel surcharge) and that is before you add on the extra cost of checking luggage and inflight food.

Only last week I managed to get a RT ticket LGW-KUL for £296 (hand luggage only and no food but with pre-selected seats - have to have my window seat Smile). There was good availibility until end of March 2012. Can't wait, going in Feb.

If you check airasia.com for travel in November you will see there are flights only x3 a week (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday). The increased frequency you mention will start in December. I believe one of the A340s is undergoing maintenance in November so one aircraft is covering LGW and ORY.

Thanks for both answering!

One more question if you don't mind...

I see they are at the South, where do you think they will mostly go... pier 2 or 3... or just a mix of both piers?

That's a great deal. No other carrier can come close to matching it. So it looks as though pax must book months ahead to obtain the best prices, ie prices which undercut the likes of EK/EY/QR.

Unfortunately I don't have the answer for you. Maybe someone else here can assist ?

Their promo fare is currently starting at £95 oneway, add the different taxes to that and you end up with a £229 bill. That's more or less the same amout they advertise for oneway flights from ORY (275€). Still ok but not wonderful...

for a 4000 mile plus flight that sounds like a steal of a deal.

Right, but you can find similar fares on other non-LCC cariers as well.

The taxes are high for LGW-KUL, but much less for KUL-LGW. The return fare is £95 base plus approx. £15 tax.

I've just booked a return LGW-KUL-LGW for £358 (excluding the £12 credit card fee)

Aren't taxes required to be quoted in the fare in Europe? Thus, with high taxes the fare breaks 99 pounds and thus has far less 'marketing pool.'

Just a thought.

I wonder how the yield is doing? I cannot image all the seats are the promo fare.

It looks as though the LGW press release was written for them by D7. It's incorrect. Check with D7's website and you will see there are only three flights a week for KUL-LGW. That is because during November there are maintanence checks taking place so only one A340 will be available at a time to operate KUL-LGW and KUL-ORY.

Quoting lightsaber (Reply 23):

It seems D7's fares are competitive when you book several months ahead. Try booking a flight in November or December and you'll see how expensive D7 can be.

If they're selling a lot of these seats after being in the market so long it can't be great, you're not beginning to cover your costs on £99.
