Qatar Airways To Benghazi From Nov 1st!

Mon Oct 24, 2011 5:32 pm

QR announced TODAY 4-flights a week to the liberated city of Benghazi on eastern Libya. Strangely flights are due to start on Nov. 1st, a week from today! Very very strange to announce a relatively long haul route within a short time: political route.

4 times a week with A320s. Not sure if its bookable

Funny how the article TOTALLY ignored the civil war that is happening/has happened in Libya!

Quote:

Qatar Airways has announced plans to launch scheduled flights to Libya's second largest city of Benghazi on November 1. Operating four-times-a-week non-stop from Doha, the newest route will take the number of destination launches by the airline to 15 during 2011.

Probably.

The funny thing is that its not even bookable via the website. It is just mentioned in the NEWS section.

I didnt know that QR actually started Basra back then in 2003! I thought they just announced it, but never went through with it.

Yup, they operated probably about a dozen flights before the limelight faded and they stopped doing it. I did about 2 of them!

Would be nice if true. Can anybody confirm that THY has actually started their operations to TPI? I heard from someone from Libya that they do not fly on a regular basis.

Furthermore, what does it help to have a nice connection if the new visa requirements are not clear?

I am guessing TIP?

Has either airport officially reopened?

Wikipedia shows resumption dates for a number of airlines...is this accurate?

Isn't there a ton of shoulder fired Stinger like missles not accounted for? I would think that would be of concern to airlines from NATO countries...

See it for yourself. TK operates to Mitiga, not Tripoli, probably due to safety and security issues.

Never heard of this, I know they were to do Kabul in 2004 which they cancelled few weeks prior to starting.

It is the advantage of the first comer. This new Libya has lots of potential. There is not much of an airline industry left after the demise of Gaddafi and the 6-8 month long civil war. Getting a firm hold in this market would be an advantage over prospective competitors, both from fellow Gulf Carriers and Europeans alike. It is also a low risk entry as the market is first being explored and performance assessed with the 320. I see the start of more QR routes in Libya, and the upgauging to larger equipment in selected markets.

Thanks for that information and the link, which was very helpful. I sent this link to our local representative, who had told me that THY had made only one flight and then stopped the activites....

Just received this information:

Quote:

TRIPOLI – Anatolia News Agency
Turkish Airlines (THY) flew 98 passengers to Tripoli yesterday, marking the first time an international passenger flight landed at Tripoli Airport after the Libyan war ended. The Tripoli Airport had just been reopened to international passenger traffic yesterday.
THY scheduled flights to land at Tripoli Airport every day of the week except Fridays as of Nov. 7. The U.N. Security Council had closed Tripoli Airport to air traffic under a March 18 resolution. The council ended all interventions and operations in Libya as of Oct. 31.
Protests began against the Gadhafi regime on Feb. 17 and turned into clashes that rapidly spread throughout Libya’s large cities. Clashes ended when the Libyan National Transition Council declared independence Oct. 23.
Last month THY announced that it had resumed flights to Libya’s second biggest city Benghazi.

I think they turned out as humanitarian charters but they were also advertised at the time as a new scheduled flight even appearing in the Oryx magazine route map and the big glass route map on the wall of the ticket office in City Center mall Doha!

Not at all, I think. You can create a booking and travel through the QR website, no problem.
