That was in USD.

"The winner of the eBay auction was 48-year-old Miami businessman Gino Bertuccio, according to the Wall Street Journal, which said he had mistyped his maximum bid amount but was still enthralled at being on the flight."

$34,000? I remember about two (?) months ago the first commercial 787 flight from NRT-HKG was listed on the ANA site and selling for normal fares.. or not?

Even if he mistyped his maximum bid, someone ELSE would have needed to bid him up that high. What fool would want to pay $33,000 or $33,500 for that ticket?

I think this was a "sealed bid" / "best offer" auction - i.e. everyone names their maximum price, and the highest maximum price wins (and pays that price). So he would not have needed anyone to bid him up to that amount.

Still astonishing that he could make a mistake to the tune of $30,600 and still be happy with the outcome....

Probably someone a bit less "foolish" than Julian Hayward of Sydney, who paid US $100,380.00 for two Suites Class seats on the inaugural A380-800 flight with Singapore Airlines, though SQ did throw in dinner at My Humble House restaurant. Without dinner, Suites Class on that flight went for around US $10,000.

The other thing to think of, does a part of this money go to some charity. If you are going to donate, why not get a seat on one of these flights with it.

Meh, we have a few "fools" on this website that pride themselves on being one of the first to fly xyz aircraft, for whatever that distinction is worth.

If its going to charity then I think its worth it and you get a nice thing for yourself at the same time. If not then its hard to justify personally but then again if you have the money its your right to decide how you spend it.

I continue to be amazed by how true the adage about fools and their money is
