PAN Am 707 At FRG!

Thu Oct 27, 2011 10:30 pm

Forgive me if this was posted but I didn't see anything. I rejoined airliners for this- but always read the posts and trip reports. I happened upon this a half hr ago at FRG. Is this Travolta's plane?!?! I assumed it was in for a taping of the show. Anybody have any news about it?! Needless to say I was sooo excited...my friend thought i was insane!

I hope she is still there tomorrow when I am on my way to work!!       (or better yet, I get to see her climb out over my building if she departs RWY32!)

Don't tell me Travolta is a fan of ABC's Pan Am! Please!

Though it would not surprise me.. Particularly after seeing his "performance" in that strange sci-gi film he was in..

Yep, that's Travolta's plane. I'm really impressed that the producers of Pan Am are taking out all of the stops to making the show authentic.

I wish air.neters would stop picking "Pan Am" to pieces. It's a TV show not a Discovery documentary. It's like "West Wing", it's a damn show ...Yes, there are some faults, like the F/C lounge in the back rather than in the front. And No big martini glasses. Just sit back and enjoy it.....shneeeez

A few months ago, I believe there was a Pan Am DC7 at FRG as well. But, based on your screen name, I am guessing you'll be coming in on a 727?   I love seeing the Tex Sutton one parked on the ramp there (almost as much as I like to see that thing climb out LOL!)

I enjoy the show, they are really trying to make the airplane stuff very authentic. Better than most. I'm telling you though, I am 40 years too late getting into this biz if FA's were all that pretty back then!

+1

Seriously, I know it's not perfect & all, but it is better than most. I do notice that the interior 707 shots seem to be about the same cross section as a 767, but I know that is a necessity to get the kind of shots and angles they need. As we all know here, a for real 707 would be almost impossible to do what they need that way.

Anyway, the show does a great job trying to get things right & I for one am not afraid to admit that I've seen every episode so far.

Not usually - it is in full Qantas markings, they covered them on the port side of the aircraft for filming. Here's what it looked like Tuesday night when it arrived:

EA CO AS, Mike Vogel (the captain) spent about 15 minutes talking with a few of us from the museum, mostly talking airplanes, plus a little about the inner workings of the show. It's a cold and damp night, although it has stopped raining, and everyone has been wearing heavy coats, hats, and gloves. As the crew was heading back out after dinner, a pretty young woman, walked past me - all bundled up, but she looked familiar. As she went by, she smiled and said "Hello, how are you?" and I realized when I heard her accent why she looked familiar - it was Karine Vanasse.

To tell you the truth, Yes 95 to 97% of the F/A's in the 60's and early 70's were very, very petty woman and very professional too. I have a cousin that was in the business and almost did not get the got because they did not think she was pretty enough for the job until they found out she was 2nd runner up to Miss Minnesota at age 18.

You only need to fly an Asian carrier these days to see what it was like here back then. Asian carriers seem to be intentionally emulating the way service used to be in the west - probably they're just doing what everybody around the world used to do, but they just kept doing it through the years, and we stopped. Many Asian carriers still have standards for age, height and weight of FA's. And the service level they provide is very similar to what you see on Pan Am. (I fly ANA and JAL fairly often.)

Yes, I find faults, but man is it just a fun show. Ok, silly... but fun.

I hope the show lasts long enough to the introduction of the 741. (I'm not interested in watching PanAm's demise... More the 'golden era.')

"Jet Clipped Majestic"

This -138B is going to be playing that 707-321

Not that anyone sans us will notice, but they COULD have just referred to it as a 720B or even a 707-121B for this episode! Nice to see a real 707 though

It's interesting that they have the Pan Am livery going all the way to the tail, but they haven't covered the tail itself. Is there some legal reason for this? Or would it just be that Qantas doesn't want their logo covered up?

The other interesting thing to me is that the previous 707 exteriors have all, to my knowledge, been complete CGI. I wonder why they've suddenly decided to use a real plane for this one episode.

The tail probably won't be seen in any of the shots they were doing, so it wasn't necessary - they may CGI it if needed. And you don't want to put anything on the rudder that might effect its balance (such as peeling paint off when you remove it...)

With a little research, couldn't they at least put the "Jet Clipper" name in the correct location and use the correct font? They are going through the expense to do all the other stuff fairly nice...Why screw up such a small detail?

I agree, but they got the Pan American lettering the correct font and the correct size this time, unlike with the DC-7B.

Yes, they used a vinyl wrap, but I was talking about damaging the paint already on the rudder - that was an issue when the removed the wrap from the DC-7.

Vinyl wrap was coming off this morning on my way into work at about 8:30. And as an extra bonus, on the Sheltair ramp was the Tex Sutton 727. What an awesome way to start my work day...seeing 2 functional classic airliners on adjacent ramps just feet from my car. AWESOME!

It's a given that Pan Am is specifically aimed at women, most of who could care less about the actual aeronautical, operational aspects of the Boeing 707. When you see the enriched soft colors on the show- a lot of exterior scenes shot during the "sweet light" an hour before sunset- Pan Am radiates an impression that this is a beautiful nostalgic dream of some woman who fell asleep after reading a romance novel. World Airways' "blood n' guts" Daly in an overloaded Boeing 727-100 during the fall of Saigon this ain't.

But wouldn't it be nice if the show had dialogue like this?

Margo Robbie as Laura boarding the Boeing 707-138B: " Hm, doesn't this aircraft look unusually short?"

Kate Garner as Kate: "Yes, and the engines look wider in the front and different than those in our last episodes too."

John Travolta in a cameo: "Good day ladies. I'll be your Captain today.

After Travolta closes the cockpit door. Margo Robbie as Laura: "Don't get too excited girls. You're not his type.

Pan Am is just about the only thing I watch. I don't mind the fact that the show protrays a stovepipe 707 as the lastest in airliner technology in 1963. I love the airpane shots, the Pan Am terminal (of which I have faint memories when I flew one of the airline's DC-8s to London in the mid-1960s). I agree, while not perfect, the show is more accurate than most. Now about those attractive flight attendants previous posters have been talking about - there are pretty women in this show, as well?

Are they really going to paint the Sutton 727 in a new color scheme? Would be great to see as she frequently visits ISP, always nice to see a 727..

As far as the show goes, only caught a glimpse of it and it seems like a nice show, however it would be rather interesting if every season they do a different decade in the Pan Am history... Should be interesting if they ever showed the 80s or 90s
