New Vueling Flights From BCN

Sat Oct 29, 2011 5:22 pm

Hi there!

From last days of February, Vueling will start a dramatic expansion in Europe (mainly in France) with direct flights from Barcelona.

Aalborg, Brest, Cardiff (just commented in other post), Copenhagen, Stockholm Arlanda, Strasbourg, Florence, Groningen (from April 01st), Lyon, Marseille, Nice and presumably Southampton will be new destinations.

I understand cities as Copenhagen, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Florence, Lyon, Marseille and Nice but Aalborg?, Groningen? Brest?

And to operate to Florence, is the A320 capable to land there?

Your thoughts?

Regards,

Gerard

The groningen airport runway is to be extended, and the manager held a press conference last week, stating that he wants GRQ to be a gateway to the world, meaning at least flights to 3 main hubs for connections.

This area of Holland, and nearby Germany is full of wealthy retired people, more and more businesses there that escapes the expensive west of Holland. Furthermore there are loads of Intl students in the large colleges and university that require travel, and Dutch students are known for going abroad a lot.

Do you mean Southampton in England as the runway is not large enough for an A320 as far as I am aware.

SOU can easily accommodate B757 and A320. But I haven't seen it mentioned in Vuelings expansion. Flybe will be hacked off if it comes off.

If an A320 can reach Varna or Bourgas it can sure make BCN.

180-seats-aircraft taking-off from FLR is something that never happened before AFAIN.

Well, buzz/Ryanair couldn't keep a daily BAe146/B733 service to London alive. So, why would BCN attract even more passengers from GRQ. It's hard to believe that this route will become a success, but I really hope that they will succeed!

Never realised that, always thought the runway was too short, especially since airlines with that size aircraft have always ended up at Bournemouth and only BA Connect and Flybe have really flown from Southampton.

Don't forget that Vueling also operate the A319 now, which may be a better fit for some of these routes and airports. I believe more will be cascaded down from Iberia in the coming years.

No, I did not mention SOU as not capable to take A320 flights... I said FLR.

Hi Dan,

seems that VY have returned the 319 to IB.

GRQ? that's madness.... They should have opened BCN-EIN, EIN has the capacity, many passengers, The Netherlands' second largest airport and is growing pretty fast. Makes me wonder if they did some research.

EIN already has HV to BCN and FR to GRO. It undoubtedly doesn't require another operator.

"Makes me wonder if they did some research" indeed.

Anyway, back to GRQ: per its entry on www.therouteshop.com and based on MIDT and ICAO data stated therein, the airport expects up to 40,000/annum to/from BCN.

FLR is feasible with A319 and BCNFLR is bookable so there's going to be a A319 coming

It's really exciting to see so many new destinations from BCN but schedule is not always the best. Hope biggest cities will last during W12 also!

GRQ to be a gateway to the world

Hahaha! He must be kidding!!!   I think this route will last for a very short periode. EIN or MST would have been more logical (much larger target group). BTW. I thought that the runway is too short for A320s and B737s (all HV charter flights make a fuel stop in EIN or MST because the runway in GRQ is too short).

Well, FR couldn't make MST-STN work, but they seem to have good success with routes to Spain and Italy.

The (proposed) summer-only 2-weekly flight to BCN could well become a success, at least if they're able to take off with all 180 seats.

Is the short-field performance of the A320 superior to the 738?

I think the BCN-GRQ will work. There is a direct buslink as well between Bremen airport and Groningen airport via both city centers. Already a lot of Dutch people use the FR base there in BRE. Many of them have second homes in Spain, or spend the wintermonths there.

They could also use their A319's for the flights to Groningen, which I expect them to do.

Well I'd guess that it's better to compete with other airlines, offering sharp prices to BCN. Since all low cost airlines will move to LEY or EIN in the near future, why the hell would they fly to Groningen with more cattle than people? Are Spanish people really interested in Groningen? Groningen is nice but I think Eindhoven has more to offer.

BCN-GRQ will no doubt almost exclusively cater for GRQ-originating passengers. GRQ itself, per www.therouteshop.com and MIDT and ICAO data, anticipate up to 40,000 passengers per year on GRQ-BCN. As Joost said, a proposed summer-only, twice-weekly service to BCN should, in theory, probably be fine.

I have good hopes that the route to GRQ will become succesfull. Twice a week is a nice frequency and it gives people the opportunity to go to BCN for just a few days, like a city trip. The airport has had the same amount of destinations to offer for a couple of years now and I know for a fact that a lot of people will be interested in a (short) holiday to Barcelona (which hasn't been offered yet). The flights will commence on April 28, on the Saturdays and Tuesdays.

Quoting SASMD82 (Reply 15):
I thought that the runway is too short for A320s and B737s (all HV charter flights make a fuel stop in EIN or MST because the runway in GRQ is too short).

The runway is now 1800m, which should be sufficient for non-stop BCN. There are also non-stop flights to FAO, AYT (summer), AGP for example, all operated by B737's and Airbus A32S's. The other flights (operated by Transavia) are part of a triangle and therefor stop at either EIN, RTM or MST. It's not purely a fuel stop, it's also for pax.

Anyway, time will tell!

------------------------------------------------
Regarding the runway extension:
The Raad van State will take a decision about the project NOV 3rd and hopefully they will rule in favor of it. A small group of people has been complaining and succesfully holding it back for 30 years now and it's time for them to quit.

I hope the SOU-BCN flight does happen, be nice to see another airline here! So bored of BE!

Don't forget VY also offer connections so I imagine it being really popular here if its a 3 weekly service or something like that, obviously not enough demand for a daily flight but if the schedules were right, I sure would use it alot!

Flybe have been saying for many years that they intend to start BCN but they never have so its about time someone did!

Munich

The end of the monopoly of Star Alliance in this route.

Your thoughts?

Agree, its an exotic route but the schedule is appropriate. I think VY can gain a lot by serving secondary destinations that may not work for legacy carriers but could work with VY's lower cost base.

A direct blow to JK. LH will always have the feed traffic at least. Between VY and FR, JK's future at BCN is in trouble...
