The afternoon flights from Europe are beginning to arrive into EWR and JFK. Any diversions or delays due to the snow?

You can look at the respective airport arrival/departure boards on the PANYNJ site. Here's a link to the JFK arrivals where you can see the diversions

This is quite the freak storm. I was born and raised on Long Island, and still live here at the age of 31 now. I cannot recall ever seeing snow this early. I do remember cold night/mornings with frost by now, but not accumulating snow. The problem right now is that it isn't really "snow" right now (at least out where I am at FRG right now). It's a cold rain with big wet flakes mixed in, and it is coating things very slightly with a slushy covering. If this REALLY starts accumulating around here, I can see hundreds of thousands of people around here being without power due to the bad combination of trees cracking under the weight of the wet snow (which would accumulate even more since most trees still have their leaves), and costal areas are under a high wind advisory so we'll see wind gusts getting up to about 50mph. Long story short, this is going to be an interesting mess to watch.

I couldn't agree more, it's almost magical especially as we approach the holidays. It was interesting watching the snow mix come down from my office window when all the trees right outside the window still have leaves LOL!

Why is it that every time I visit this area there are weather disruptions? Last time my flight was cancelled because of a tropical storm going up north, something that hadn't happened for 40 years or something.
This time my flight is cancelled because of snow. The last time the area experienced snow in october was 25 years ago according to the weather channel.

Things got pretty messy over at EWR. Mostly slush on the ramp, but some outside areas had 6-8 inches of snow over 4-6 hours. Amateur hour in the ball park with deicing. Tons of planes pushed from the gate, waited and waited, and had to return to the gate before getting fluids... Pretty much everything was cancelled and everyone was told to go home. Roads are mess, saw seven accidents on my thirty minute drive home.

EWR, JFK had delays up to 6 Hours for inbound and outbound flights on Saturday Afternoon, a number of flights just cancelled. This has been a very wet and heavy snow, the temps at the airports are hovering at freezing and expected to stick below freezing and with the winds picking up overnight in the immediate NY City area and Long Island. It's volume and density is very difficult to move. It is breaking records for quantity of snow so early in the 'season' and for October in the NY City metro area. It could be 4-8 inches in NY City, 8-10 inches in the suburbs, a foot or more in the mountain areas 40-50 miles north and west of NY City. The storm should pass through the NY City area by about Midnight, BOS by dawn Sunday

The rate of snowfall of 1-2 inches an hour, comming in intense 'thundersnow' bands in some places, is making a general mess throughout the Northeast from DC to Maine. Power is going out in many areas due to the still leaf laden trees loading up with wet snow and breaking limbs, pulling down power and other lines, and those limbs also breaking onto roads, railway lines paths, making local travel by car or mass transit a real mess. Some places, including PHL airport was not really ready with their full ice removal equipment for a/c., causing further delays. Normally in the NYCity area, we don't see any measurable snow until early December. The FAA as put in a storm plan to manage traffic in the region.

Stay home and hopefully this storm will pass soon.

PVD, facing south close to the ocean has stayed in the rain and has received some diversions on a quick look, inc. a DL 752 from SNN to JFK, a B6 A320 orig. MCO BOS and a WN 737 which eventually got repositioned in IND. Hopefully the milder ocean off the Southern NE coast will keep the area out of the white mess and continuing to operate.

Not to beat up on who started the thread, but a lot of people I know (outside of the Northeast) seem to think NYC is in New England. Perhaps that assumption is the reason for the thread title.

I'd imagine it does, but the ground delay rule isn't going to override physics - if the plane isn't where it can let passengers off, it can't let passengers off.

There's at least one AA and one DL international arrival as well - don't know if they're true heavies or 757s, but they're trying to get through customs regardless. BDL's customs facility isn't very big.

Really sucks for the international flights, because they simply can't get off the plane if they can't get into customs - they have to sit there and wait. BDL sent some supplies out, but that's pretty much all they can do.

It doesn't sound like B6 operations was very helpful, so kudos to the BDL people for stepping up. And from the sound of things, the FAA or DOT is going to have some things to say to the airline, which might be well-deserved.

I think that was one of the reasons FOR the new 3 hour rule. Wasn't it a CO (or was it NW) flight that couldn't get into MSP, so it ended up landing somewhere in southern Minnesota late in the evening and the airport wouldn't let them pull up to a jetway, nor would the airport let the pax off the plane so they were on the plane until like 5am.

This seems like a similar issue - if you are going to divert, you should divert to an airport that has the capability of letting the pax off the plane after 3 hours.

Yeah, CO Express (Expressjet). And fining the airline wouldn't have done anything - it was the airport that was the holdup there, not the airline.

I'd tend to agree, except that it sounds like the ramp at BDL is too slippery to be moving airplanes by tug (or perhaps even under their own power). That pretty much freezes gate capacity where it is, since no gates can be vacated to let more airplanes in. And you don't necessarily know that's going to happen when you make the decision to divert there.
