Libyan Arab Airlines Boeing 747-2L5B 1980

Sun Oct 30, 2011 7:20 pm

Why Libyan Arab Airlines did never receive the 3 ordered Boeing 747-2L5B on order (5A-DIJ, 5A-DIK and 5A-DIL), 2 were painted ( 5A-DIJ and 5A-DIK)?

then they were sold to Varig as PP-VNA, VNB and VNC...

Any nswer???

I believe that there were US sanctions in place back then which prevented Boeing from delivering the aircraft to LAA.

Pity; they would have looked great in LAA colours!

Funny you asked the same question already:

Libyan Arab Airlines 747s (by DID747 Apr 7 2005 in Civil Aviation)

Then there are several other discussions about the topic also:
1980 Libyan Arab Airlines 747 In Full Colours (by Babaero Mar 10 2009 in Civil Aviation)
Libyan Arab 747s (by Babaero Jul 19 2002 in Civil Aviation)

But yes it was an embargo on Libya which blocked the delivery of the planes. The embargo also blocked other sales including 767-200s to LAA also.

As Kaitak correctly stated, the US embargo halted the delivery of the aircraft. There was a big poster of the LN 747 in TIP airport for years, which as a kid was a total mystery to me as to why. The US embargo led to some serious cannibalization of parts to keep the 707s and 727s in the air through the 80's. It also kept LN from buying the A300/310s as, IIRC, there was no issue with Airbus selling the planes, LN just couldn't have the engines for them! LN did eventually get 2 ex-BCAL 310s by being rather sneaky, but that's another thread.
