What's Up With The Flybe E-175s?

Still no E-175s with Flybe.I was hoping to fly on the new jet this Wednedsay but looks like the old Q400 again.When will they get them at last?

Yes, I keep wondering that myself! They should have been delivered about two months ago. Last I heard was that because BE was trying to put in place a large financial package and lawyers on both sides were going through the contracts line by line. However, that was quite a while ago.

Other rumours speak of modifications which needed CAA approval, but I can't think that this would cause such a delay, especially since the airline has already had E-195s for some time and presumably any mods would not be much different from those already in these aircraft.

I spoke with the guy who's handling this only last week.

He said the delay is because Embraer has structured a deal to take the first 20 aircraft as a package, with financing supported by the Brazilian BNDES bank. Flybe is putting down a 15% deposit, and said it has secured the other 85% of the funding. But the nature of the package means there's a lot of paperwork involved, and it's taking longer than Flybe wanted. The other 15 will also be structured as a package, apparently.

This can't be the reason because there is no separate approval for each EASA country any more. Once the aircraft has a type certificate from EASA, then the aircraft is certified for all the EASA countries.

There was a statement recently which said they would be arriving in Q3 2011/2012. That's a pretty significant delay really; 6 months just due to paperwork. Personally I have my doubts that is the sole/real reason.

I happened to cast my eyes over a winter schedule for LGW the other day and it had noted down the scheduled operating type as E175. As the winter schedule starts tomorrow, I guess Flybe was planning on having the aircraft in place.

Are those E175 meant to replace the Q400 or are they an addition to the fleet as they can fly longer routes than the Q400?

If they are an addition, Flybe will be a huge airline with 150-ish aircraft. Impressive!

I assume the E-Jets will replace the oldest Q400's and also to increase frequencies on current markets and a few destinations. I was trying to book a flight with them and they have good flight times (speaking of one day of the week) but poor flying days as most destinations don't have daily service. I wonder if having such a small fleet all spread out is profitable. (I mean small compared to Esay Jet and such airlines)

That depends very much on the route (and presumably on the demand for that route). On EDI-BHX or EDI-SOU, for example, they operate up to 7 times / day each way, so there is no shortage of frequency or choice.

They've appeared many times in the schedules, but because of the continuous delays they've been subbed/changed to Q400/E195s in the system. So the above doesn't mean much, sadly.

A mixture really, seven Q400s have left the fleet over the past few months, so the initial aircraft will indirectly replace these.
