LO016 EWR-WAW Emergency

Tue Nov 01, 2011 1:21 pm

Polish media is reporting in-flight emergency of LO016, Lot Polish Airlines 767-300ER. Apparently gear and flaps failure. WAW is closed and preparing for emergency landing, the police also closed nearby Krakowska street.

I'll advise further as soon as I get visual on TV

The affected frame is SP-LPC, the newest airframe, built in 1996 IIRC.

I hope they'll be ok but he probably has gravity gear extension and electrically backed up flaps, so fingers crossed.

Didn't they have another emergency to Chicago some time ago as well? Could it be the same plane?

Belly landing - flaps 15, gear up, small fire extinguished, pax evacuated. Frame most likely out of service for a while.

Any pics from the media yet?

Polish TV (TVN24) just showed the video. Full belly up landing. Amazing piloting skills. Reports of no injuries.

That's some awesome airmanship.

Edit: correction: from what I see, 767 landed at full flaps, with gear up.

It looks like something is spraying up based on the pictures/video on Post 12, so it appears so. Unless that's water and it had rained...

0 injuries just confirmed - truly amazing job. Both pilots deserve an award for this.

Bad news for everyone WAW bound: 767 is resting at the runway crossing, airport is closed until the damaged aircraft is removed.

Wow! Would this have been a total hydraulic failure??? This seems so rare for a widebody and shocked that a manual freefall didn't work either.

Unlikely. Crew landed with full flaps with spoilers extended at touchdown; looks like some sort of landing gear related issue, as they were unable to extend it with gravity-drop.

I see that LOT only has 5 767-300's. How will this affect their international schedule? This aircraft is obviously going to be out for quite a while.

The video is amazing - can't repeat it enough but the landing was perfect.

Quoting kl911 (Reply 19):

TV reports are saying that the runway was foamed - they had over an hour to prepare the airport for landing. They even closed the roads around the airport.

The 767 stopped right at the intersection of WAW's two runways, so the airport will be closed for a while. Planes are being diverted to POZ, LCJ (Lodz), GDN, and KRK, per TV reports.

Some flights around busy Christmas season may be cancelled, otherwise - no issue, as the winter is slow on transatlantic long haul for LO.

Not a write-off after such a landing?

Foaming can actually cause more problems than non foam. Is easier to see what you are dealing with.

I tought most 767's at LOT where pretty old, very likely write-off, even when new.
Maybe they can get some of their 787's a bit earlier ??

From the video, damage doesnt look that extensive. Only parts of the plane that touched the runway were the tail and the engines. Then again, the 767 is nearly 15 years old, so it'll be up to the insurance companies and LOT to decide wether its worth fixing. LOT will probably have to lease another plane. I would love to listen to the next conversation between LOT and Boeing regarding the 787 delays and the delay compensation...

14,5 years old according to Planespotters.net:

Very fast site, note that this plane already is listed as stored with a remark to today's incindent!

Sure the damage does not look extensive. However, what about the pressure bulkhead or whatever it is called? Does the fate of the aircraft depend on it?
