Lion Airlines MD-90s: Still In Ops?

Thu Nov 03, 2011 9:14 am

Before the massive expansion with the Boeing 737-900 fleet, Lion Airlines of Indonesia get five former American Airlines / Reno Air McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30s.

Two of them had accidents back in 2009 and the MD-90 fleet was grounded after for some time. But they put the other three MD-90s back in operations.

2181 53570 MD-90-30 PK-LIK
2182 53573 MD-90-30 PK-LIL W/O: Damaged! (09-Mar-2009)
2129 53489 MD-90-30 PK-LIM
2133 53490 MD-90-30 PK-LIO W/O: Damaged! (24-Feb-2009)
2144 53551 MD-90-30 PK-LIP

I have the information, that PK-LIM is now stored at CGK. But what's happens with the other two aircraft's (PK-LIK, PK-LIP)? Are they still in operations with Lion Airlines?

Newest picture on A.net of PK-LIK is from September 2009 and from PK-LIP is from December 2010.

Thank you for your help.

Have the 2 damaged aircraft been scrapped, or might they be repaired.

Well, it says "W/O" next to "Damaged", so I would assume these are total losses

Neither of these aircraft were a "total loss". PK-LIL ran off the runway and had some landing gear and wing damange and PK-LIO had a problem with it's nose landing gear. Looking at post accident pictures neither looked that damaged from the outside, but that doesn't show what went on that on the inside.

The airframes were intact, perhaps they are stored somewhere?

Idk, anytime I see W/O, which from my knowledge means Written-off, it sounds pretty final to me

The last aircraft rotation document I saw from Lion Air was a few months back... LIK,LIM, LIP are still on duty 2 at a time, as 1 is always awaiting C checks or are rostered as "reserve". LIL and LIO are being parted out / scrapped (although progress on this is slow).
The above are based on my memory which could be extremely rusty!
