Pics & VIDS: So What's It Like To Fly 787?

Fri Nov 04, 2011 9:55 pm

Hey All,

Just wanted to share some items here that I've been putting together since last week's first 787 flight in Japan.

I put together a video blog of the first flight, which you can see here: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/fl...ideo-blog-to-hong-kong-with-a.html

Though that post didn't leave room for my impressions (Aviation Geek-style) of the airplane, so I put together this extended post on what it was like to fly 787. I've posted audio of the takeoff compared to the 777-300ER and a bunch of photos, as well as a very special "Easter Egg" hidden on the airplane.

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/fl...lying-the-787-this-passengers.html

Also, I wanted to say thanks to all of the a.net community, some of you know FlightBlogger really started here. My first post was in May 2007 titled:

Where In The World Are The 787 Parts? (by IAD787 May 4 2007 in Civil Aviation)

Needless to say, the rest is history.

Onward,

Thanks for posting this!

How exactly did the seat lottery work? I assume the business cabin was a different lottery than coach? Did people trade seats afterwards?

Why was the cabin crew running so late?

Did you get to keep the wooden sake cup?

Thanks so much for the great read, well written and not overly geeky!

Do you believe that this plane does live up to Boeing's "game changer" slogan? Obviously technology wise it's an amazing machine but do you think and from what you've heard is the fuel consumption lower? Are the general flying public going to be happier in a 787 than a 767/330 etc?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the review. I really hope that with the pictures of the different levels of tint on the windows, the debate about them will end.

With the air not coming from engine bleed, did the 787 cabin not have that jet exhaust smell that occur on aircraft with bleed air systems during engine start ups?

What a wonderful video! It's great to see the 787 flying from a passenger's perspective.

I'd like to mention that the mood lighting was pretty interesting....The windows were awesome and so is the wingflex. I do hope I'll fly on the 787 once UA introduces it.

Once again, great video, very historic!

Thanks for posting!

Also, maybe the audio file comparison is a bit misleading, but isn't that high pitch sound on the 787 a bit annoying to the ear? Does it recede eventually, or one just gets used to it?

Funny that the cabin crew was running late. Can't imagine what was running through their minds, and yet they both still managed to be friendly and break a smile.

I don't see how UA and other carriers are going to make 3x3x3 work. Even ANA's 2x4x2 looked cramped.

thankyou for sharing your first flight with us, you did a tremondous job of video taking. I look forward to flying on Air Canada but since I'm going to Asia next year I might give it a try on ANA from NRT to HKG.

777 comparison was interesting, but I really want to know how it compares to the A380. I'm sure I won't have long to wait.

I guess I really meant to say normal for coach. Knowing what I know about ANA coach it sounds like it is one of the better products.

2x4x2 doesn't look cramped to me..it should be the same width as A330s?

Thanks for the video. I wasn't much of a 787 fan before, but that video has changed my view. The 787 looks and sounds absolutely superb.

The 787 is wider than the A330/A340, so theoretically, they should be able to fit a wider seat at 2x4x2. It appears what ANA have done though is have a double armrest in the two middle seats, so it's more like a 2x(2+2)x2.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience!
From an aesthetic point of view, to me it is the most beautiful airplane. Love the wings - from all angles. It is almost as if the aircraft was designed purely for looks and not aerodynamics, which of course is not the case. Simply gorgeous.
For some reason, I am more interested in this aircraft than I was when the A380 came out.
ANA looks to be a wonderful airline.
Nice to see one airline taking advantage of the extra width, and making the seating as comfortable as possible. The seating reminds me of the 2x2x2x2 concept of the DC10 and L1011 back in the 70s. At least on the DC10 we had at Western, a small table separated the pairs of seats in the middle. Makes even economy class a comfortable way to travel. I sat in one of the centre seats on the DC10 on many occasions, and in total comfort.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Carl

On the video it is stated that the sake ritual was partaken by everybody except the pilots. Hmmm. The cabin crew had sake before flying?

Amazing vid. I can't wait to ride on the 787. I just wish they could bring the 787 to the west asap. i want to see it in the US cities. I'm dreaming about it already. It looked like the engines were hanging out farther than I anticipated. Those engines must be huge!
