A380's At LAX! Any More Coming?

Sun Nov 06, 2011 5:53 pm

Currently at LAX we receive QF,KE, and SQ A380's. We are also scheduled to receive the AF A380 starting on May 28, 2012.
Is their a good market for operators such as LH and EK to bring their A380's to LAX? From what I know LH and EK have pretty good markets here at LAX, LH with 2 LAX-FRA in the Summer, LH also with 1 LAX-MUC year-round, and EK with 2 daily year-round flights from LAX-DXB.
Also, does CZ still have plans to bring their A380's to LAX?

For EK, I think they'll wait until the "improved 388" is delivered starting in 2013(ish). It is a bit lighter and will increase range/payload a bit. This also holds true most likely for SFO.

DXB to LAX and SFO would incur some significant weight penalties to make it with the current version I'd think.

LH brought the 388 to SFO last summer so LAX should be a no brainer once the TBIT upgrades are done.

Ultimately, I think we can see 1 from Singapore, 1 from Air France, 2 from Korean, 2 from Qantas, 1 from Lufthansa (or maybe 2 747-8), 1 from China Southern, 1 from Emirates, 1 from Asiana, 2 from British Airways, 1 from Virgin Atlantic.

Ultimately I think you'll see, at least, 4 from Qantas. It may take most of the rest of the decade to replace all the B744, but it will happen.

And I think that seeing a third one in the next 2 years is a real possibility -- moving to A380 on BNE-LAX or the second SYD-LAX makes sense to me from a scheduling point of view, once they are down to a 9 strong 744 fleet.

Other ideas -- BA seems to be a given once they get a few, and I daresay VS will send an A380 too (if they ever get them).

How many gates are 380 ready today? How many of those are remote gates? The new terminal is still more than a year away. Wouldn't most airlines wait for that?

LH is thinking about sending the 380 to LAX. But nothing confirmed. LH wants to send the 380 where it makes most sense and LAX would be an option.

You can add Vietnam Airlines to that list.

Will the 748i be more premium cabin heavy compared to the A388? LH does well with their premium cabins out of LAX.

I believe CZ is only going to use their A388s domestically for the time being.

VN doesn't even have a schedule to start LAX yet. Wait until they arrive to see how things go first before jumping the gun on that one.

How's SQ doing with their A388 to NRT at this point? Was there talk they were thinking about downgauging it to the 77W during the slow period of the year?

Don't count on VS receiving A380s. I don't think it's going to happen.

LH will only have max 8 F class seats in the long haul fleet (except the 2 class config 340s). So the 748i as well. Don't know about the exact number of C class seats. The 744 has 80 C class seats during winter and 66 in summer. And the 380s have 98 IIRC...

If I remember right, LAX is more cargo oriented than SFO, I remember many years ago to fly LAX-FRA on a 744 combi. If that is still true, I see a small advantage for you to fly there on 748I. Or one A388 and on 748I from FRA and the A346 from Munich to please all spotters.

LH is definitely the most likely candidate next, and after that, my money would be on CZ. For CZ, putting the A380 on the route would make a lot of sense. It is great publicity for the brand. I'm sure they would like to become more well known in the United States.

If FRA-LAX-FRA is a cargo heavy market, then the 748i makes more sense than the A388.
Currently the only carrier flying 74Ms from LAX to Europe is KL on AMS-LAX-AMS. I believe they only use the 74M during the winter months and during the summer it's a mixed operation between the all passenger 744 and the combi, 74M. KL has a large Horse transport business from LAX.

True, but LH Cargo flies to LAX as well (AeroLogic as well). So the cargo can be taken on the Cargo airplanes.
