Are There Airline Freaks Like Me?

Fri Oct 06, 2000 7:24 am

I know there are freaks out there but do any of y'all go to the airport for hours and just watch planes or spend your cash on flights to places and back say in the same day? And just think about planes 24/7 ..(oh and ladies)...all the time? merci,

All the time. In fact, years ago in Germany, I went to Frankfurt Airport and asked the Lufthansa agent for a round trip same day ticket to Stuttgart, so I could fly on a Convair 440 and a Viscount. She said the flight to Stuttgart was sold out, so I asked for a ticket to Cologne instead. She really must have thought I was crazy. But I got to fly on two Convair 440s, which was almost as good.

About 9 or 10 years ago, It used be accept round trip fares no minimum saturday overnight requires. I go fly morning and back afternoon or evening. I always traveling the most of time from Chicago to Cleveland, Detriot, Columbus, Louisville, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Kansas City. Southwest has great fares as much as $38.00 round trip. I do fly other airlines United, Delta, Northwest and etc.. It was great memorables my flights in past years. Now, it is high fares and restriction fares requires. It makes me so mad! I hope to change fares apply less restriction and no stay require again in near future.

It makes me smile   to see that I am not alone with my "freakiness" either!! I am eagerly planning several vacations next year (I have free tickets on UA - domestic, DL - domestic, and DL - international), and rather than plan my trips by destination, I madly search the schedules to determine the type of aircraft that I would like to fly, and how many connections and airports I can visit!! Hmmmm....777, 767-400....well, I could say farewell on the L1011......hmmm........

You're not a freak. I've done Washington-Brussels and back, just to fly on the United Star Alliance 767-300, and to see Brussels Airport. All in all, I spent 2.5 hours in Brussels total, and spent 14 hours traveling time to do so. The ticket was free (employee pass).

I am possibly going to do a there & back in one day trip from SFO to LAX and back the day after thanksgiving, AA is offering $106 roundtrip (usually it's a one day stopover but not 23-24 November) but I'm now deciding between that and a set of those cool uniforms the volunteers wore at the Sydney Olympics...

decisions, decisions

I suppose I could wait until next summer when my tentative route plan for my trip to Europe is:
SFO-LHR-HEL-ARN-HEL-JFK-SFO
(Travelocity says only $1500!)

I am a spoiled brat. I once made a day trip BOM-LHR-BOM so that I could pick out my birthday present there. Ah the joys of non-revving.

More recently, I made an ATL-MEM-GRR-DTW-ORD-MSP-SEA-MSP-DTW-ATL mileage run over 36 hrs in order to clinch elite status for the year.

Back when I was young enough to fly for free when my Dad worked for the airlines we would do some fun trips for the day or weekend just for fun. There's a twist to it though...

On a Friday night I would write down the terminal Letters and we would pick blindly out of a hat. Once a terminal was selected I would write down the gate numbers from the airline magazine map and someone would pick from a hat again. We all agreed on a time around 7am and off to the airport we went. It was such a thrill to see where we were going as we walked up to the gate. We had some good luck and some bad luck, but most cities we flew too turned out to be a fun visit for the weekend. Some cities we visited were Washington D.C. twice, Philidelphia, Boston, Orlando, New York, One flight turned out to be too close to home so we waited for the next flight that turned out to be Dallas. It was a blast

Another time my classmates and I were going to Washington D.C for a field trip. The buses were to leave Raleigh at 5:30am.. to early for me so I took the 8am flight out of RDU up to DCA, caught the subway to the mall area ate breakfast, and met the group at the Air and Space Museam at 11:30am. Good thing I did that too because one of the buses broke down and they had to cram in two bus loads into one bus. After spending only a few hours they headed back while I walked around for the rest of the day looking at a few more landmarks, flew back and beat them home. To see their faces as they pulled up was well worth the flight. They were jealous to say the least.

Now that I can't fly for free you would think I wouldn't fly as much today, but I always find a reason to fly. Actually I think I fly more now, but the downside is I know where I am going.

A days spotting for me is arrive at CLK at 8.00am and leave at about 6.00pm.

I've flown to Tokyo, seen a YS-11 in service and the next day flown on it , just to say I have !!

I spent 6 hours in transit at Salt Lake just to get on a 727.

I've taken a ferry to Macau (different country) just to check the reg of a TAP A340 !!

Yes, I'm an Airline Freak.

I once flew OSL-AES just to be on the very first flight of a start-up airline (Color Air). The real cool part was that for some reason, the airline never charged me - no wonder they went belly-up...

Nowadays I fly non-rev - but here in Europe we have to pay a s...-load of taxes, so it's not as cheep as in the US

I buy all the things with airline logos on them, all the mags, posters, t shirts, and my parents hate it!

I just love the airlines, new colour schemes all the stuff to do with airlines and their wonderful planes and their routes too

you are not the only one out there, thank god!

keep it going!

I love watching planes, looking at the pictures in airliners.net, checking out airline schedules, airline history, the history of individual planes, I like to see what plane I'll be flying in, what the N-number is (I keep a log), where it just flew in from, etc. I'm a freak, but oddly enough.... I hate to fly. I think I'm a bit claustrophobic. It's not being up in the air that bothers me, (I love to look out the window) but after a couple of hours (or even a couple of minutes) I just want to get out of the plane, but of course I can't get out. I don't panic. I just get nervous and uncomfortable.

My job requires a lot of travel. I'm a Delta Gold Medallion member. I'm usually in the air a couple of flights a week. You'd think this would be an ideal situation for someone that loves planes so much, but I dread the next flight. It's weird.

Yep, another freak here. I travel alot on business, and many times I've picked flights so I can be on a plane I've never been on before or pick a routing that has extra segments on them so I can get elite status.

B747-437B: Regarding your mileage run, the routing looks like Northwest, right? How much did this 'run' cost ya? I haven't traveled as much for business this year, so I might have to do something similar myself. I'm a Continental member, so I could do the 'run' on either CO or NWA. Thanks for any info...

hey, you are normal. Its the rest that have no focus in life. I used to do the same thing when I was your age.

On a day off I would fly FWA-DTW on DL, spend a few hours, eat abite, then fly DTW-ORD on either a UA dc-10 or a AA 707?, spend some more time & drink a beer since IL was 19 y/o to buy beer, then back to FWA on a UA 732.

If we were short cash, my buddy(now brother in law) and I would drive to ORD on a Sunday AM from Fort Wayne and spend the day there, then drive back that nite. Hmmm, yup we were a little crazy, but damn did we have fun!

Yep,

I am an airline freak too. The other day I was travelling from ATL to RDU and I arrived at the airport 8 hours before the flight so I would have enough time to take tons of pictures. Then I switched flight so I could fly on a DL 752 instaed of the regular MD 88. It was great! (but I shouldn't say that to any "normal" people, they just don't get it...). Every time I travel I request some weird routes and the travel agents always look at me like I am some kind of a weirdo.
I spend hours at the airport every week. I go their on my way to work on the morning, on my way back from work in the evening when the weather is good (the airport is not really on the way to work, but I don't mind the 15 mile detour).
Anyway, I am a very sick person according to my fiancee... That's probably why she loves me!

Qantas 777

As you can see by all of these posts, you are definitely not alone. I can see by your profile that you are young. Take my advice, get yourself hooked up with a lady who shares, appreciates or can at least tolerate your passion for airlines, airliners, flying and hanging around airports. Otherwise you will be miserable.

When I was in college and had the $$ I used to fly EWR-PHL-EWR on Eastern Airlines "Night Coach". They had a $22 one way fare and used to operate an L-1011 on the EWR-PHL leg and a 722 or D93 on the PHL-EWR flight. My friends used to think I was crazy to spend my money that way.

I used to pore over copies of the Official Airline Guide while planning a trip. Now I use the internet to arrange journeys where I try to fly on airlines and aircraft that I haven't been on before. Some people still think I'm nuts to fly GEG-DEN-SFO just to have a chance to fly on a 777.

Enjoy!

These are the only things in life (Ha!)

Planes, girls, cars, computers, planes, sex, more planes, food, jobs to make money for flying, plane books and plane models, and film for taking pictures of planes, airports, air lines......

you get the idea.
